I hunt game that I eat. I've been asked several times to go to Africa, but declined. I just cannot get hyped over shooting something like an elephant or a rhino.

I would like to know just exactly how many of y'all that are against this type of thing have actually been over there to do it? Or are y'all just making generalizations?

I actually avoid Jimmy John's because of this. I am a lifelong hunter, but I believe these big game hunts are bullshite, especially when they involve hunting animals that are not ordinarily hunted, like big cats.

There's a big difference between a hunter taking plentiful game animals and a hunter who kills to add to his collection of things he's killed.

Are you suggesting that those who are against big game hunting need to go to Africa and try big game hunting to be against it?

Is that how you found out you didn't like getting anal or did you just kinda know you wouldn't like it?

I'm sorry, but killing an elephant I think you have to be fricking insane and honestly awful. They are very majestic creatures that are highly intelligent, very emotional, have human like family structures, and actually mourn their dead in borderline religious ceremonies. Shooting an elephant to me is about as appealing as shooting a Golden Retriever.

No, I'm talking about their claims that the villages don't ever see that money or that the villages aren't fed with the meat, which both are lies.

Those animals are problems for those people in those communities. Not only have they been known to harm people, but they will also destroy livelihoods by destroying their crops and killing livestock. They're a helluva lot more grateful that we come and help them out than if we protected those animals.

Most often, elephant hunts are very selective and remove old animals, male and female, that are far past their prime or ones who have been trampling and destroying crop fields.

But elephants aren't like lions where they'll be killed as soon as a more robust male comes along. They quite literally have burial rituals and mourn their dead. They're the only other animal besides humans to do this. If the old matriarch is shot, the elephants will be distressed for months and may never recover. That's the one species you don't kill simply because they're old.

Must be appealing to the rich but I don't see the sport in it.

I'm a hunter and would rather take a 170 low fence whitetail buck than anything pictured.

To each his own

I hear there a few hundred mountain gorillas left in the Verunga.

If only they could just set a price on them for fat, old, foreigners to come shoot, then they'd be saved!

The few hundred tigers in India just need to be hunted back to healthy populations.

I'm a life-long hunter and even I think it's pretty shitty to shoot an elephant, rhino, and cheetah.

I would never personally enjoy hunting animals like that, but I hate how much info gets left out in articles like this.
First of all, that $350,000 he was willing to spend will go towards wildlife conservation in Africa.
Second, in all these African big game "trophy" hunts they are going after an old male who is well past its breeding years and is probably also killing other elephants, rhinos, etc..
Third, the meat no matter what the animal is, will get eaten by the local villages and this "evil trophy hunter" will be celebrated for his generous donation.

Yea, what is crazy is that him paying $350K to kill one elephant can actually generate money to save many elephants.

More like in the pocket of the guide service owner and his guides. I'm sure it makes you feel good to believe that though.
