I go to a garage sale near Shanadoah last Friday. I find a bowl of jewelry and search through it.
For 50¢, I find a group of army ribbons and medals. They are all on one rack. They included Vietnam with one cluster, Arcom with cluster, Purple Heart, plus many more I didn’t recognize. Plus there was a Meritorious Unit Commendation with 5 clusters.
I turn and show the lady, making sure she knew these were in there, even though they were in a ziplock, priced 50¢.
She was like, “Yeah, they were my dad’s from when he was in the army.” She didn’t really give too shits about them.
I ask her if she knew what they were and she said no. I explained them to her and said these should not be sold.
I told her I’d take them if she really wanted to sell them, I would honor them.
She decided to keep them (I guess I guilted her into it).
This event has bothered me for four days now. How could someone do this?

Maybe her father was a gigantic a-hole.

I know there are certain people I'm related to that I would never keep anything they gave to me.

I told my parents that I literally do not want to inherit anything from them EXCEPT my grandfather's WWII ribbons.

He's got a bronze star, two purple hearts, multiple ribbons awarded from other countries as well as campaign ribbons from North Africa, Sicily, and Italy

Told my siblings I will stab them for it

You did the right thing but I almost feel like it needed to be taken a step further. Like track down someone else in the family who actually gives a shite. But, that would be weird, and the other family members may be just as indifferent.

No shite. A friend of mine had his dad's medals stolen and he was devastated. Who and why would someone steal someone else's war/military medals?

If you think that is sad, You really need to get out more.
Never heard the saying one man's trash is another's treasure? People don't value everything the same.

This has nothing to do with monetary value. You can buy these pretty cheap.
It’s what they represent. I’m a recipient of two Arcoms. They have great value.
