You act like this is some monumental effort that takes the full effort of 2 branches of government. Why should we have forts named after literal traitors to the USA?

What a joke our country has become.

Just white guilt
Wealthy white people feel guilty about living on "stolen land" built by "slave labor" and instead of doing anything of substance they just patronize.
"For your troubles, I'll name a fort after someone who kinda looks like you."
Thats the gist.

Polk should never had the honor of having a U.S. military installation named after him in the first place.
1. He served a total of 5 months in the U.S. military.
2. He was both a terrible strategist and tactician in the Civil War.
3. He was insubordinate to many of his commanding officers.
4. His rank and positions in the CSA were owed to the fact that he was very good friend with Jefferson Davis.
Military historian Steven E. Woodworth described the shell that killed Polk as "one of the worst shots fired for the Union cause during the entire course of the war", as Polk's incompetence made him far more valuable alive than dead: "Polk's incompetence and willful disobedience had consistently hamstrung Confederate operations west of the Appalachians, while his special relationship with the president made the bishop-general untouchable."

And he never took up arms against the United States of America.
so let's rename the Apache helicopters and any other indian names since they took up arms against the US as well.

So this black WWI private was more deserving of having a base named after him than Audie Murphy (as just one example)?

You may be correct, but there are dozens of Medal of Honor winners who are more deserving that Pvt. Johnson.

I was stationed a Fort Polk briefly after the First Gulf War. The main thing I remember is during the summer, every day between 2-3 in the afternoon it would come a freaking deluge. Then as quick as it came, the rain was gone, the clouds were gone, and the sun, heat, and humidity were just brutal. Within minutes everything had steam coming off it, including us.
Glad you enjoyed your time in Cenla!

Audie Murphy is on the list of 87 individuals that they want to rename installations after, including Roy Binavidez

Why?
Is there really a measurement of heroism past the point of fighting in the face of certain death while gravely injured to protect your fellow soldier and country? Does body count really matter? The courage in this to me is past a point of comparison to others who had similar actions.

Private Johnson continued fighting and took his Bolo knife and stabbed it through an enemy soldier's head
That Johnson gave out it's own head.
