I both envy and hate you. What are you doing? Retire or career switch

No such thing as a former educator.

Once and educator always an educator.

Curious, how old are you? How many years teaching? I don’t want to leave education but if I did I think the only thing that would sway me would be some insane pay raise to make up for losing my pension that I’ve been paying into and i haven’t been paying into SS. I know you can get some of your money but retiring with that pension is sweet.

35. Been teaching for about 7 years. Starting pay isn’t insane pay raise right now but going to start at what I would retire at in another 20+ years. I don’t take the summers off so that has never been a benefit for me. I always work during the summer doing different odds and ends jobs.

That’s an interesting switch. How did you manage that? I’ve got 9 years in and am considering getting out. It’s damn near impossible to move up. Too many dinosaurs sticking around.

Been pounding the phone lines for a while. Finally just talked to the right guy at the right place. Had a buddy push and vouch for me.

Somewhat. Really a coworker is close to retirement and everyday he talks about how he hates work and doesn’t want to be there. Don’t want to end up like him.

Where do you teach? I taught for 9 years and just completed my 6th year as an administrator. It was really a matter of being a really impressive teacher for 2-3 years and in the mean time learning how to really curry the favor of the people who make things happen. I start at $27K/year in 2004 and make $68K now.
