Ford CEO Farley tells retired engineers fixing quality will 'take several years'

'Caveat emptor' aka "Let the buyer beware"

And there it is. I am surprised Ford let this get out but good on them for coming out and saying the obvious.

After a number of years of recalls troubling warranty costs, Ford hired former J.D. Power VP Josh Halliburton in March of this year to be executive director of quality. In November, Halliburton got a new boss, Ford moving longtime product development exec Jim Baumbick into the role of chief transformation and quality officer to replace Stuart Rowley. Having just called the audible, it's going to take Ford time to execute the play. Ford Authority reports that when CEO Jim Farley recently spoke to the Ford Retired Engineering Executives (FREE) group, he told them, "Fixing quality is my No. 1 priority ... It is the most important initiative in the whole company. And it’s going to take several years."

According to Detroit Free Press figures, Ford Motor Company spent $3.923 billion in warranty costs in 2020 for 4.19 million cars sold globally, nearly $2 billion more than GM in a year where auto factories had to shut down for two months

As Farley told the engineers, "We didn’t lose [quality] in just one or two years,"

Ford motor focusing on EVs to the detriment of quality in their bread and butter products, the ICE.
It’s like BP, beyond petroleum bullshite. Safety and productivity suffered worldwide. BP is a G D oil company. Shut up and drill.

They’ve been making vehicles since the early 1900’s but still can’t figure this out.

American car companies love two things.
One is fricking the American worker by moving production out of our borders.
Two is planned obsolescence, so you pay for your next vehicle faster.
I just hope that err'one stands with me in wishing them well on selling their shite vehicles to Mexicans, and enjoys their Toyota.

That's just because GM are bigger POS, I hope the class actions on the lifters and transmissions knock them on their arse.

It's a dangerous move by not only FOMCO but also the 'Big Three' by going all in on EVs.
I am seeing major catastrophe, ala the Ford Edsel, ala the Titanic, the Chernobyl Disaster...by going all out on EVs.
Perhaps the thinking is that big government cheese is going to bail them out.

They had it to begin with?

They’ve only been building chunks of shite for 100 years.

We have “ford has always been shite” and “ford focusing on EVs ruined their reputation”
You guys need to fight it out and figure out who’s the biggest retard

This is the same old news as always.
Japanese manufacturers listened to Mencken when we sent him there after WWII to help rebuild the country.
US automakers? Not a chance.
The real change lately is even more unreliable sub-suppliers from all over the globe and even worse lackluster assembly quality of sub-components and vehicles in Mexico. Also, pushing out different models too fast with not enough durability testing.
As another poster stated, Toyota seems to make domestic US production work and seems to keep reliable sub-suppliers a high priority.
I really can't see myself owning another Ford vehicle for the rest of my life. This is coming from someone who owned a 1998 F150 bought new for 20 years.

I've never been a Ford vs. GM guy, but I have two 2014 Fords that have been the best vehicles I've ever owned. Nothing but oil changes/routine maintenance for 8 years. One is a hybrid with 200k miles and the other a SUV with 110k miles. I guess I'm lucky or their QC fell off a cliff after then.

No, gouging the public on trendy electric trucks is the most important initiative at Ford.

The fix is easy.
Stop making things in Mexico.
Stop buying cheap Chinese electronics.
Control your products end to end like Henry Ford did, stop outsourcing your R&D.
Lower your prices, costs, and overhead. Go back to the basics of building simple dependable vehicles.

I’m a Ford guy but I will definitely be looking at Toyota for my next purchase. Ford has had recall after recall. I have over 120k on my F150. The wife has almost 300k on her suv. Quality fell off the cliff during Covid apparently.

I wish a Ford and a Chevy, still last ten years, like they should
