Federal regulators have intensified an investigation into the sudden loss of power steering on the Ford Fusion, according to a report on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In the report the agency said it began investigating the issue in September 2016 after receiving 547 complaints from owners. They complained that “significantly increased driver effort is required to maintain directional control of the vehicle.”
Since then NHTSA says it found about 2,200 complaints to either the agency or Ford. There were also reports of 13 accidents resulting in seven injuries, the extent of which was not noted.

I love my F150 but I've had this happen to me 3 times over the almost 8 years I've had it. Luckily I drove an old mustang without power steering once upon a time and I was prepared.

Interesting factoid:
The Ford family were some pretty hard core Nazis. Henry Ford's books and articles about Jews from The Dearborn Independent were used to "inspire" Hitler youth. Ford is the only American mentioned favorably by Hitler in Mein Kampf, and was awarded the Grand Cross of the German Eagle in 1938.
I went to Detroit last week and saw the Henry Ford museum, so I guess I supported a Nazi charity. Worth the visit if you are ever in the area.

At least they combined this with the doors not latching safety feature on their trucks. This could have been much worse.
Ford Motor Co said on Wednesday it would recall about 1.3 million vehicles in North America, including certain 2015-17 Ford F-150 and 2017 Ford Super Duty trucks, to add water shields to side door latches.
The No.2 U.S. automaker said the safety recall is due to frozen door latch or a bent or kinked actuation cable in the affected vehicles, that may result in a door not opening or closing.
The company said it was not aware of any accidents or injuries associated with the issue but said because of the fault the door may appear closed, increasing the risk of the door opening while driving.
Affected models:
2015-17 F-150s built at Dearborn, March 12, 2014 to Dec. 31, 2016
2015-17 F-150s vehicles built at Kansas City, Aug. 11, 2014 to Dec. 30, 2016
2017 Super Duty trucks built at Kentucky, Oct. 8, 2015 to Sept. 1, 2016

I had a 2013 Explorer that did this. Driving along and suddenly the power steering would go dead and it felt like you were driving a tank. I would have to pull over, stop the vehicle, put it in park, turn it off and then re-start the car and then it would be fine. Took it in to the ford dealership and they fixed it.

I've had an F150 continuously since 2004(2001 Lariat 2004-2014, 2012 FX4 2014-present), and never had this happen while the engine was running.
