Active Self Protection (YouTube)

He goes through the footage of a Las Vegas Walmart shooting back in 2014 (i think that's the year). A CCW tries to play hero, and ends up getting killed. I'm not saying what he did was wrong, but it makes you think on how to handle the situation. Every situation is different though. Especially if one of you're loved ones are involved.

If it were me and only me, and I had my sidearm on me, I'd be willing to help anyone in my vicinity get out. But I wouldn't go seeking out playing the hero, and chase the shooter clear across the store/building. I can't say the same if my wife or kid were with me and we were in different areas.

I would've posted this in the ODB, but I feel as if the main guys over there already know this. If you carry, and want to play the hero, be sure you're absolutely at spiritual peace with not only God, but with your family as well because it could possibly be your last day.

Not an entirely fair assessment. Did not know the perp had an accomplice who was in trail.

Run, hide, fight. In that order. If you can't run, hide. If you can't hide, then fight.

I'd have to be pretty hemmed up to try and rambo a shooter. I carry a glock 19 so I'd likely be outgunned. Handguns are pretty shitty weapons at ranges greater than a few yards. Everybody likes to think that they are going to turn in to dirty harry when bullets start flying. Like you said, having family in the store would change things but if it is just me, I'm hauling arse if possible.

Most of us would not have the training or mental capacity to do something

yeah, I get the impression that most people on here think they're a cross between Rambo and a Navy SEAL(we do have some good writers on here,) but going to a gun store or a range and paying a few bucks to have a piece of paper to put in your wallet doesn't really give you a special set of skills

Then why CCW? Solely for your own protection? I am not looking for a fight, but if I have the means to protect someone else I am going to use it. I could not live with myself otherwise.

I don't know a single person who thinks this.

I would like to think I would do the same thing as the man in the video. I won't know for sure until I'm in the situation though.

I carry for a reason, it's to protect myself and others if necessary. There is a risk of death for sure. But he could have died anyway when the shooters got to him. We all die, and going out like that man is preferable than waiting to die helpless.

I'd have to be cornered or protecting family to engage.

Yeah I had to watch that video when I got my license. The instructor was explicitly clear: if you choose to engage you are jeopardizing your life. Right or wrong. You don’t know what’s going on and neither do police. So, either the shooter(s) can kill you, or the police can mistake you for the shooter and kill you. Your pistol is a last resort. The best thing to do, is get the frick out.

I know a few. They think that their CCP gives them John Wick abilities and they are going to save the day with a single headshot from their .380

Did you need to post this on two boards?

The gun I carry is my very last resort. I wont be seeking to be the hero and I dont go looking for conflict so I can shoot someone. I'm getting myself and/or my family as far away from the conflict first. My gun is there in case the conflict is right on top of me with no way out.

As many have already indicated.. every situation is different. The reality is that even with one shooter, unless they have a handgun you are already tactically out gunned. I can hit a target rapid fire with my handgun at 60 to 75 feet but that target is not shooting back at me either...

Also, you never know if another licensed carrier or the law may mistake you for the criminal

Your response decision tree is correct in a "mass" shooting scenario..

Exactly. Using the logic of the video, the perp could have had a second accomplice in trail who could have shot him as he exited.

The average CCW holder doesn't have the training or firepower to rush into an unknown situation and do what needs to be done. The average cop doesn't either, but they at least signed up for the job and have the legal authority to do so.

There's a time and a place for self defense, but it's not every time and every place. Anti gunners grossly underestimate the usefulness of firearms for personal defense. Pro gunners, at least some of them, overestimate their usefulness.
