re: For those with a company car. Do you use it for personal use?

I realized early in my career a company car could go places that would challenge a four wheel drive truck.

Lol sure it is unless you are getting only 14 miles to the gallon.
13.8

I get to claim mileage for my personal vehicle at $.58/mile which well pays for the gas and more. The downside is I’m putting over 50k miles a year on my personal vehicle.
So you pull in $29,000 a year off mileage? Just buy a new car.

I dont currently have a company car, but I’ve had several over the years... the answer to the question is absolutely i’ve used my company car for personal use, and anyone who says they dont is lying or retarded... i usually took my personal car for long road trips, but i knew lots of people who’d drive their company car to Florida for vacations and stuff, no one in management ever said a word, because they were doing the same thing.
The best part of having company cars is that the company covers all maintenance, oil changes, insurance and gasoline costs.. from 2012-2017, some of the years when gas prices were relatively high, i never once looked at a gas price or compared, just pulled in and used the company gas card to fill up.
All that said, I’m now at a point where i prefer to use my own vehicle for work and get reimbursed for gas/wear and tear.. Ive had some good cars, the Ford Fusions were pretty cool, but then i had a 2016 Impala which sucked.. and the worst was my last one, a 2019 Nissan Rogue which made my arse sore after just an hours of driving.. now i just drive what ii want, and for me it’s much better.

First job out of college, I had a company car. And it was nice to have a car with a current inspection sticker, windows and turn signals that worked, and AC.
Fast forward a handful of years and lost the company car, but received mileage, below the IRS level, but "Fuel, fluids, filters, and one set of tires every 12 months". This was probably the best.
Third party administrator now.

I use mine as if it was mine... with a lot of discretion.
My company pays for all upkeep and I have to pay taxes on personal mileage use. Last year that was almost 1k because I had to take it on a personal trip or two that racked up more miles than intended. I always pay my own gas for out of town even though I’ve never been questioned on it and probably wouldn’t.
If I haven’t gone out of town for a week or two and I need a fill up I use my personal money.
ETA: my company cars have all been focuses or fusions.
Laugh as you may, I’m going to shoot for a Kia Soul next time if my boss will go for it. Good features and a bit of storage with good MPG. Hideous car but I’ve enjoyed them every time I got one for a rental.

Personally, I prefer driving my company car.

About 3/4 of that is business the rest is personal use

We've got to keep out personal mileage less than 15% of our work mileage when reporting every month

I would take a company car in a heartbeat. Take the depreciation on that instead of my own property.
How would you claim depreciation on personal property you don’t own? LOL

The depreciation of mileage and wear/tear is not covered by .58 a mile

No, I would rather not get mileage and have to use my vehicle.

I remember back in the 90s my dad would pull the fuse that controlled the odometer on his and we would take trips with it on the weekends

wear/tear
I've never understood this "normal wear and tear" thing. Things do wear, but is it normal to just tear something and attribute it to regular, predictable aging?
"Oh, I just tore my seat. That's pretty normal, though, since the car's 5 years old now."
How about just not tearing shite?

I use it as my own
Fuel and all. I report mileage and if personal use reaches a certain point I pay extra taxes.

Ive enjoyed the various company vehicles I’ve had over the years, and I used them for personal trips all the time.. but unlike coworkers of mine who sold their personal cars, or only had their company car and maybe their spouse’s vehicle- i always kept my personal vehicle and didnt sell it... Why? Because corporate America will cut you loose in a second if you have a down quarter, and they’re trying to save a few pennies... And unless you have a spare $20 or $30k laying around to buy a decent vehicle in the event of a layoff (not including your emergency fund to live on), good luck finding someone to give you financing with no job... after a few years of taking up space in my driveway with my personal vehicle, keeping it barely insured, etc, i started wonder if i was paranoid and should just sell it.. then one day, i got the axe.. i was really glad to have my car to drive when it came time to turn in the company vehicle.

50,000 miles per year billed to company.......at 50 miles per hour you are driving 1000 hours per year against a standard 1850 hours worked. so 53% of your work contribution is as a driver. delivery service maybe a courier. padding expense is a career hazard
