They called me out on it, and I had to end up cancelling because they wouldn't budge. DirectTV and Cox internet now

I cancelled everything except internet. I bought Apple TV for $100 and Hulu Plus for $8/month. I stream everything. $66/month for 25mbps internet. Best decision I've made. No phone either. If you fell you need a phone look at Ooma. It's internet based and something like $3 per month.

i haven't pulled the trigger yet, but i'm very close to doing this same thing. did you jailbreak the apple tv? did you get an HD antenna for local stations? i'm just worried about being able to keep up with everything during football season.

I streamed the NBA playoffs as well. I finally saw the light. I was paying close to $200/month for tv. It's amazing how much we over pay for tv. Also, people should buy their own modem if they are renting form the provider. Such a rip off. I was paying $8/month for my modem for over 5 years when they only cost under $100 to own. Crazy.

It's not as bad as you think. I do have an HD antenna. It doesn't work that good since I'm pretty far from the station antenna. Check out Aereo for local channels. Although, Aereo is being challenged in court right now so I don't know how long it will be around. If lobbyists get their way, Aereo may be gone.

This has been why I couldn't pull the trigger, either. That, and CST, which now will appear to be obsolete.

Also, my TV is older, so I'm worried there may be some things not compatible, but if I save enough monthly, I have no problem upgrading the TV.

I'm not very tech oriented, and when someone says jailbreaking, that's like a foreign language.

As long as your tv has a HDMI outlet you are fine. I didn't jailbreak my Apple TV.

It does. I just put a Roku device on it but haven't really figured out how it works.

So you can get all the live broadcasts, with no time delays or anything? What about movie channels?

festus, netflix, amazon prime, hulu, and an HD antenna would cover 90% of most folk's tv watching, if they're not tv addicts. for me, it's probably closer to 95%. i found myself looking through the tv guide this weekend and thinking i haven't watched tnt, abc family, cspan, bravo, whatever this church channel is, etc. etc. etc. in months or years. looking at my cox bill, i despise paying for basic cable, then extended cable, then some gateway thing, then for the HD receiver just got get the 4 or 5 HD channels i actually watch.

i think i'm just gonna go ahead and cancel it all soon, then get ludicrous speed internet. that'll force me to figure something out for ESPN and live sports broadcasts. word on the street is you can use a friend's login from their cable company for the watchESPN and other cable apps.

through my jailbroken apple tv, i've install xbmc, and i've seen where you can watch live tv and espn. but honestly it's kinda cumbersome and tedious to navigate, links are always getting broken or disabled or blocked, and it's not HD quality. i think it'll just keep getting better, though, but the problem is staying on top of the newest and latest apps/plugins.

also, i'll miss a tv guide to actually know when things are coming on tv, but i'm sure you can find something online...i guess...

After seing this discussion, I looked up Apple TV. Im intrigued by this and the Hulu Plus option, yet not sure all it entails. Apple TV is a device that allows you to connect to some type of Apple Database that has various types of media sort of like Netflix? You buy the device initially and then automatically have access to all of this media with no monthly fees? Is Hulu similar to netflix but more for run of the mill cable tv networks? I have 200+ channels, but realistically watch about 10-15. If I could get the channels I want (VH1 Classic, Cooking, Outdoor, Sportsman, MLB, NFL, History, A&E, Nat Geo, TLC, Food Network, ESPN) and have access to movies and not have to pay Cox $140 a month, I would switch right now. This is all very foreign to me however.

maybe hopeful doc will come in here and start dropping some real knowledge.

you know how apps on your iphone are basically just shortcuts to websites that are set up to look nice on mobile devices? there are apps on apple tv like that, but you have to pay or subscribe to each to use it, like netflix, hulu, etc.

lots of people are in this boat, and that's what drives them to cut the cord

Cooking, Outdoor, Sportsman,
channels like this would be hard to find, i think. i don't have hulu right now, but i seriously doubt they have any programming like this.

I just switched from Cox to DTV today.

I had to sign a contract, but it's going to save me $1000 the first year with basically the same stations (slower internet, but I rarely use it anyway)

They went up on mine and I told them I was canceling. Didn't offer any incentive to stay so I quit. Now saving $85 a month and getting more features through Eatel.

This is an issue for me too. I like scrolling through a guide to see what's on, and what's coming on.

And dnm, I'm in the exact same boat as you. I have a few channels that I really enjoy and spend most of my time watching. I'll have to do some research to see if these channels can be accessed through some of the other sources. I watch a lot of Discovery channel, History channel, etc. If I could figure out a way to access them, without it being super complicated, I'd go that route. I just can't tell if you have the same access to all these channels if you go strictly to something like Apple TV.

That's why I'm still considering DirectTV, where I could cut my bill drastically, and still have access. And I want to make sure that I have access to SEC Network. Not sure yet if that will be guaranteed through the Apple TV alone.

It's way more complicated than it first appears, at least to me, who's not super tech savy.

Glad you got it down and got all the upgraded equipment.

You will love the contour so much more. You can pause and rewind on any of the receivers and it organizes everything sooo much better.
