Many people who commit suicide do so feeling that the people who love them will be better off without them. They see themselves as a burden to those around them and actually think by ending their lives they are freeing those people of their presence.

It's a mindset that once it takes hold is extremely difficult to turn around, and is a major sign that someone is very serious and genuinely contemplating suicide IMO.

Its why when people say "talk to your friends and family when you feel depressed" it was always weird advice to me (however well meaning it was). At my worst moments I felt like my friends and family only tolerated me and would be better served with out me around. Often I even thought they secretly didn't want me around at all and were hoping I'd go through with it. Obviously not true but in genuine moments of suicidal ideation there's a level of delusion that sets in. That combined with the lack of hope and whatever else led you down that road in the first place is a bad combination.

At the risk of sounding unhinged I do think we have a society/culture that, while all of your basic needs are usually cared for, is somehow uniquely toxic and indifferent in many ways and leads a lot of people down a dark path. Whether it's a lack of God or something else I don't know but I feel like we're in a time where a lot of people are in bad places, and all of the "go to therapy" talk and anti-depressants in the world won't change it, it's something fundamental.

Wait. You knew a set of twins and they both committed suicide? Holy shite. I feel like that’s worth psychologically studying.

I think I would just walk out into the woods like that Into the Wild guy and let the critters have at it. Clean, natural circle of life. I honestly don’t fault people for leaving this God forsaken planet when they feel like they are tired of the ride.

Yep. Within two weeks of each other. I talked with the other every day after the first did it and he seemed fine. I told him I’d buy him a plane ticket home to stay with me if needed. Said he was ok and had to go gather all of his brothers belongings. We talked about plans of traveling around the world and spreading his brothers ashes. It was a fricked up 2020. They were supposed to be in their sisters wedding two weeks after too. They did a joint funeral and it was the saddest thing I’ve ever been to.

I have offended people by saying this, but suicide is the most selfish decision anyone can make in life. The grief and pain its causes is terrible and to leave problems for others is just terribly sad.

That child screaming and crying heartbreak was too much for me.

I get what you’re saying and someone always comes in these threads to make that assertion, but I don’t think you have a grasp of the mental hell that someone must be in to put a gun in their own mouth and pull the trigger.

You’re expecting a irrational and mentally ill person to make a rational, empathetic decision. No telling how many times they had been at that point and didn’t do it only to find that eventually, there was a tipping point.

Four of my friends committed suicide since 2008. My ex girlfriend ended her life. She used to live in some apartments south of where highland and bluebonnet meet in Baton Rouge. I drive on highland to turn in bluebonnet to see my psychiatrist. I think about my departed friend when I travel that road.

Several years ago, I sat on my bed with a pistol to my head for hours. Still till this day, I have no clue why I did not pull the trigger.

Suicidal people become lost and desperate. The overwhelming intrusive thoughts block everything else out and suicide seems the most logical escape at the time.

I miss my ex girlfriend. It hurt when she married another man and moved back home to Texas. I always cared for her. We communicated often through text and I knew she was unhappy with Robert. We sexted a few times but my heart wasn’t in it.

My ex had constant health issues since she was 25. She was a great cook and I miss those Friday nights when she would invite me over. We would watch movies and make out. But four months later she accepted a proposal from Robert. I cried for two weeks but got through it.

I think she was lonely with her husband as she struggled with knee issues, spine issues, and hip problems. She was obese and couldn’t lose the weight. She and Robert divorced about six months before she committed suicide. She left a 22 year old son behind.

It bothers me still but I think often how her issues could have been my issues had she and I got married in ‘98. I just wish I could go back in time to her apartment and hold her for a while. I will always love her even though she was a bitch to me many times.

That's operating under the assumption that someone who dies by suicide is in any kind of frame of mind to consider the circumstance. More often than not, those with suicidal ideation report that they feel like they're relieving their families of a burden.

This kind of mentality also really takes attention away from the legitimate emotional pain someone is in when they attempt/commit suicide. Psychological disorders that lead to suicide often have other physical symptoms those people experience that make it difficult to function.

He and I dated a couple girls that were best friends back when we went to LSU. Many beers were had. Was a good fella.
