I think everyone's experience is so different. I haven't found it to be a nightmare at all to be honest. It hasn't always been fun, but instead of whiteknuckling it I did put a lot of work into figuring out why I was drinking and healing some of those wounds. That part was not fun, but had nothing to do with alcohol. So fast forward a bit and its not bad because I can deal with the things I was drowning away before.

But I guess if you are just a heavy drinker just to party for fun, then yea might be a lot more miserable.

Heavy drinking from college found its way over to when I started my career. It progressively got worse and as your salary rises you can afford to kill yourself more.

I was not drinking for any particular purpose other than I liked the way it made me feel.

My outlet has been Art. I never wouldve thought I wouldve liked art but it is soothing to me and I listen to podcast etc. while doing it.

But I agree with you HC86, best decision I've ever made in my life.

I decided to quit about 20 years ago just for the hell of it and didn't drink anything with alcohol for just over 2 years. I didn't do anything other than not drink, even if in a bar playing darts or pool, which are 2 of my favorite pastimes.

It actually got to be fun to watch people come into the bars on Friday afternoons on the way home from work and see the transformation some of them made. They'd often go from white collar suit and tie professionals to almost "Frat Boy" mentality over the course of a couple hours and 4-5 cocktails.

I did go back to social drinking and it is a part of my life where I enjoy couple cocktails or some cold beers, but haven't been drunk in forever.

Don't put yourself in the position where you experience the cravings. If that means certain social situations, avoid them Break what ever routine that usually leads to drinking. This can be pretty hard to do when just being in your house after work is the situation that would lead to drinking...

In that case you might have to take some pretty extreme measures and move. No need to jump to that first, but if you try everything else and still find yourself stumbling, that solution is there. And it works.

I love going to bars and not drinking, love it. Ill have a coke with a cherry and let people get lit. Ill go do a J then come back in and watch people go down hill the rest of the night telling all kinds of fantastic stories that might not have been told had alcohol not been introduced that night.

Good times.

I wouldn't recommend it, but I got a concussion. Every time I'd have a drink I'd get a migraine. That went on for 8 months, and I stopped drinking. I haven't had a drink in about 4 years.

Heavy is waking up and walking into your kitchen and having a drink. I don’t think you can honestly truly define though. I mean a case of beer a day when your an alcoholic is pretty easy.

I used straight will power and faith. It was kinda rough the 1st three months but I followed through and I’m 3 years sober… I have become so strong that even with my wife’s illness and passing I have not even had the first urge…

Which would make her proud of you.

I just got bored with it and it would ruin the next day for me so I just stopped a few years ago. I don’t know a date or anything other than it was years ago in the summer and I was fine the next morning and have been ever since. My only real regret is not doing it sooner. Just how good you can feel with better nutrition, solid sleep, core exercise and some cardio is amazing and I feel 30 years younger. And I don’t have a problem being around it at all and enjoy being the designated driver.

I quit after a surgery, never looked back.....and never had withdrawals.
The urge really never hit me as I decided my health was more important.

Yup. I did that with regularity. Glad to not be in that boat any longer. Been a little over three years now since the last drink and I can't think of any reason to have another. When you find yourself at the liquor store every other day getting a 1.75 plastic bottle of Taaka you can't with any honesty deny that there's a problem.

All while alternating stores thinking no one else knows the depth of your problem but eventually they all know you by name anyway.

I was able to quit cold turkey. It’s very difficult to resist the urge for the first 3 weeks but after that the craving start to subside.

It would help if you try to replace it with a different beverage. For me it was a sweet dessert that would get the reward triggers in my brain going that the alcohol used to set off

Cold turkey is the way to go, especially if you have a problem. People will say to taper it off, but if you have a problem you know just one or two drinks can lead to finishing the bottle

Yeah if truly an alcoholic I don't know how tapering could possibly work. I mean I get the idea of it, but the execution seems like it would be impossible

I’ve cut back pretty consistently in volume and frequency, but still need to work on eliminating some more. Alcohol is so subtle and I get bored and love the taste lol.
Monday and Tues are fine I’m just chillin anyway.
But Wednesday is hump day!
Thursday is the night before Friday!
And so on. So without some restraint that’s five days in a row. Now, I’m only talking about 2-3 drinks, usually light beer, but still.

ETA: Tuesday means two days since last drink, so another reason to party! See how it goes?
