Something inside of me always wanted to have Jim Croce & Jimmy Buffett collaborate on song writing & even some live performances.
I’m pretty sure I’ve seen pictures of them together….

I was a young kid in the 70s. I remember me and my friends loving the hell out of the song Junk Yard Dog, 8-track tapes and all that, but not really understanding that he had died and won't be making any more fun songs like Junk Yard Dog any more.
Later on, grew up, and have loved his music ever since then. Classic stuff.

strange that several artists in the past have died taking off in Louisiana

News didn't travel very fast back then. By the time we found out he had been dead a month but his songs were still sappy sentimental music for the weak minded.

His death hit me about the same way Patsy Cline's death did.
Both great talents gone far too soon and killed the same way, plane crash.
The list of singers and musicians killed in plane crashes if quite long:
Buddy Holly
Patsy Cline
Richie Valens
The Big Bopper
Stevie Ray Vaughn
Lynyrd Skynyrd
Otis Redding
Rick Nelson
Jim Croce
Glen Miller
John Denver
And probably several others I can't recall off the top of my head.

Music enjoyment is a very subjective thing but I always took you to be more nuanced than this. That's a pretty lazy take

I once read that the record label promoted Jimmy Buffet as a result of Croces death, they had put a lot of promotion into Croce and needed a sub.

Are you suggesting that you’re too entitled to enjoy working man music written and performed by a working man?

“Photographs & Memories” was my first cassette tape purchase.
My sister had an 8-track of this one - I literally wore that tape out - I could sing almost every word of every song on it.
Every time I hear a Croce song it reminds me of those days. Always conjurs good memories.
Went to San Diego about 10 years back and there was a Croce themed bar/restaurant there, not sure if it's still there - played his music all day of course.
I do wonder did his death help with the popularity of his music are had he already gotten there in terms of success?

Jim was one of a kind. His music is really good and had a very good variety to his music.
From “ bad bad Leroy Brown” to “New Yorks not my home” Jim was just a poet….

I don’t think it played into his popularity. The album You Don't Mess Around with Jim already had him trending. That album had some great songs on it.
1. "You Don't Mess Around with Jim"
2. "Tomorrow's Gonna Be a Brighter Day"
3. "New York's Not My Home"
4. "Hard Time Losin' Man"
5. "Photographs and Memories"
6. "Walkin' Back to Georgia"
7. "Operator (That's Not the Way It Feels)"
8. "Time in a Bottle"
9. "Rapid Roy (The Stock Car Boy)"
10. "Box No. 10"
11. "A Long Time Ago"
12. "Hey Tomorrow"

My top 5 would be:
1) I Love You In A Song
2) I Got a Name
3) Operator
4) One Less Set of Footsteps
5) Time in a Bottle

I think about it 75% less than I think about the Roman Empire but 5% more than I think about Richie Valens.

Remember it well. Several friends of mine went to the concert. My buddies brother who was taking Aviation at NSU at the time worked at the airport when the plane went down. Said the next day the plane had been vandalized. When I owned a restaurant this liquor salesman that called on me was the SG president at the time, and JC had to cancel an earlier concert, but promised him that he would make it up, and did, and died. There was some LPB story of it and he (saleman) was in it describing the whole story. Then most of his songs went gold after he died.

Yes
Many good artists seem to die young, the bad ones seem to live forever.
