Why not? Surely the more creative you are the better your offensive and defensive wrestling skills.

He says he’s hit 210lbs and agreed that it may be time to cut. His hesitation is wanting to bench 310 and is worried cutting back on mass and energy will prevent hitting that goal. We talked about eating fewer meals and incorporating more cardio in 3 hours before his lifting to bring his body fat % back down but doing it over the next 3 months to lose 15 lbs and get back to 195.

310 is a goal that will take time, totally doable though over time. The cardio is fine but really keeping protein high and getting in a 250 calorie caloric deficit is what’s going to get the fat off. He needs to continue to push the lifts.

What program is he doing? I have couple Terra bytes of programs if he ever needs one.

The cardio is good but tell him to get his 10-12k steps in and keep lifting hard, but with slightly less volume. Goal should be to get down to 12% body fat, not a certain weight. Then he can go back on a slow lean bulk of trying to gain about 3 lbs a month.

Glad you talked about the creatine. Look at all the examine.com stuff. I have 3 boys myself, oldest being 12 so I totally understand your concerns but all three of mine take it. Imo it’s a staple health supplement and I give it to them more for the positive brain effects more than anything.

He’s currently benching 295. Didn’t realize getting to 310 would take that long. I don’t know if I can convince him to go down to 12% body fat. I freaked when I suggested 15% bc he’s scared it prevent him from having the mass to lift higher. We will see, I guess, when he gets down to 15%. It was definitely a much needed and constructive conversation. Super thankful for that.

ETA Not sure what program he is currently doing.

At 295 to get to 310, prolly take couple months which is nothing in grand scheme

Here is the deal that you need to ask him…is he a bodybuilder or a powerlifter. Because there is a difference. Even at 15% his fat to muscle gain ration will not be amazing but much better than current.

Increasing strength is very important as gains in strength equal gains in muscle but not when it requires you to put 3 or 4 lbs of fat on for each lbs of muscle added.

If his goal is long term bodybuilding, doggcrapp training and John meadows mountain dog training programs are great place to start. Will get him strong AF but also teach him how to lift and program to remain healthy.

I’m leaning standup grappling and takedown with a wrestler (he’s also significantly younger) to help my jiu jitsu. Their explosiveness positioning and pinning are awesome.

A wrestling background is extremely beneficial in those other combat sports. My son is at LA Tech and trains at an mma gym off campus. His background in combats sports is strictly wrestling. He helps some of the other guys who train there with their takedowns.
Like others have said, creatine has been tested extensively and is safe. I would not let my son, I have a high school age wrestler as well, take it during the season though. They train too hard on the mat and lose too much water weight during season. They should stay well hydrated while taking it. Off-season would be a better option.

this is the type of uneducated BS i was talking about. 40 years of legit studies and no kidney issues proven in health people.

Hey you stupid idiot. Look up what extreme high doses of creatine does to the kidney idiot. It tears it apart, thus you get a high creatinine idiot. You idiot.

Yeah this guy is good. I’m still a Brazilian jiu jitsu blue belt, although he’s a white belt he gives the purple, brown, and black belt plenty of problems

Doc later told me the guy was a beginning body builder and he quickly saw the benefit of creatine. So obviously the guy figures if this much of it helps this much, a hundred times this will make me massive.

If you are taking supplemental creatine, it will slightly raise your creatinine levels in your blood.

he will hit his goal with persistence and good training without gaining excess weight. Lifting and body building should be a life time hobby and enjoyment. I understand the allure for fast gains but he has decades of health lifting and progress ahead of him. Its ok to drop it down a gear and enjoy the ride.

WE get that but trying to convince a 17 year old young man of that is damn near impossible

I’m hoping our chat yesterday opened him up to a longer range perspective.

Protein and more protein. Food and more food.

He doesn’t need creatine at 14 to be a wrestler, it’s going to make him retain water weight and move slower.
