I work with a lady who has bragged about getting $5000/month in alimony checks and will do so for 25 years. She likes to joke about how she’s staying single until she’s 77 because the money won’t come in if she gets married before then.

Damn. What did her ex do for a living?

Half of 401K and pensions is killer especially if the ex-wife earned little working.

10yr marriage and 10yrs of savings goes down the drain fast.

The child support is archaic in this state. No accountability on how the money is spent by the woman.

Most women use it as a retirement / savings / vacation fund. Pisses me off to no end to see good friends fork over thousands of dollars while their whores of ex wifes take countless vacations, drive new cars, work part time or not at all.

Louisiana has to hold the women accountable - the for the kids excuse is bullshite.

There's also some rule in Louisiana about letting the spouse back in the home after she/he leaves.

If your wife runs off with Jody and then comes back after 2-3 months, if you let her in it's like she never left in the court.

If she's on the mortgage how do you keep her out ?

I don’t know.

I assume with that kind of money, he has to be a lawyer or doctor or something lucrative.

Marry a woman who makes more than you. If she's dying to leave me so bad it'll cost her lol

You need to complete a Declarations of Paraphernality to ensure that inheritance is kept separate. My parents were married for 50+ years; still my mother did that in her 70s after my grandmother died.

Re child support, it certainly can be abused. But it's also legitimate for a low earning spouse, or a spouse that stayed home with the kids, to go back to school after a marriage in order to get some earning power. Of course that can be abused.

Defined benefit pension plans can get really tricky due to the various vesting rules, often which rapidly accelerate vesting after age 45 and in the last 10 years of a work-life.

Don't get your panties in a wad. Its just a joke! If you are happy I don't give a rat's arse who you sleep with.

Dudes...wedding ring is yours, all furnishings and appliances is 50/50 when purchased while married, she buys it or you do, split, or if she is dumb enough, she'll let you have it all without paying a dime.

Take all your inherited property or make her buy it.

More to property than house and retirement....way more. The wedding ring is some serious funny stuff when you take it. Glorious!

I have zero alimony since no cheating/abuse or she just declined that part....her bad.

Wedding ring is a gift - both attorneys in mine agreed on this point. I didn’t argue and watched her put it on FB marketplace for 7 months starting at 11,500 and it went down to 1500 before the listing was deleted.

I'm not a divorce attorney, nor have I been divorced. But I'd love to hear your explanation on how an item purchased before marriage, and given to the other individual becomes your property in a divorce.
