Where does this get people if everyone has this mindset?

But the instinct kicks in here that someone is 'cheating' the queue like it's a damn grocery store.
when you see people doing that, what do you think? In a grocery store, if you have 2 items standing behind a cart with 100, it's no big deal to ask to cut. People have places to be. Should have hired more cashiers.

But cutting cars into the merge lane at the end doesn't help anyone get where they need to be. Traffic flows more smoothly when people don't let in people who are in dead-end lanes...

Zipper merging is a big lie and those who zip to the front should be run of the road.

One of my biggest pet peeves. Have an upvote. I've started a thread regarding the same shite before. Idiots will never learn.

I think they're doing what the road was designed to do. Why do you want to artificially limit the capacity of the road just so you can feel like the big man that doesn't let anyone in? fricking LA drivers are so stupid.

Wrong. Using as much capacity of the roadway as possible speeds everything up.

Wrong again. What are your credentials to make your claims?

you're fighting a losing battle on this one. But you're fighting the good fight.

It absolutely does not. Every car must pass by that one spot. It does nothing at all good.

What do you do for a living again?

ETA: And just so I have this right? You're claiming that just because every car must get through one point, the capacity of the road makes no difference? As in, you think one line of cars holding up traffic 10 miles back instead of two lines of cars only taking up half the space will move at the same rate?

ETA2: And when do you want people to get in this long arse single file line?

If you merge at the end of the closing lane you're merging as close as possible to the spot where traffic usually starts moving again at a respectable speed (once everybody is in the single open lane, traffic flows).

When you have people merging way too early you often end up with one of two scenarios:
1. Someone is shooting a gap that just opened, causing everybody else to break more heavily in the open lane.
2. Someone trying to merge early in some arbitrary spot, waiting for a gap to open, slowing down both the open lane and the closing lane with room to spare.

If it was a longer single file line, you could pass that one point quicker...

You're not accounting for the slowing that would occur while everyone merges into that single file line. Again, you want to artificially limit the capacity of the road just to make people get in line sooner. That accomplishes nothing other than stroking your ego.

While in theory this is the right method, the problem is most of the people that do it this way fly up to the end of the closing Lane then come to a stop forcing someone in the right lane to come to a stop to let them in causing everything to get more backed up.

I just merge when the spot is open.

Why would you EVER leave legally open roadway empty when you are stuck in traffic.

That happens because people like Jim Rockford and chalmetteowl are too cool to let people in.

What I'm talking about is this:

Right lane closed. Left lane open, but crawling or at a standstill. Car Y zooms up the right lane to the head of the line and wants to cut in. Not on my watch.

But once everyone is merged, no one has to slow down or stop. Letting people in at the end of the line creates traffic. The etiquette should be everyone lets one car in, but if no one has to be let in... why do you think they have signs warning of a need to merge?

Yeahh...I'm not gonna let you zoom past me and skip in line because you're too impatient to wait in traffic.

I refuse to let those people in.
