Food Allergy Epidemic: Are Overprotective Parents to Blame?

Scientists sniffing out the Western allergy epidemic
One in three of us is allergic. From grass pollen to latex, peanuts to pets, allergies send 20,000 of people in England to hospital every year.
But generations before did not suffer from this epidemic, so what is it that's making us so allergic in our modern world?
Every one of us is covered head to toe with bacteria, and intriguingly scientists believe these microscopic bugs are the key to explaining why we are becoming more allergic.
Families under the microscope
The bacteria that cover our skin, line our mouths and fill our guts not only outnumber our own cells by about 10 to one but may play a vital role in training our immune systems. Changes to our lifestyles are influencing these microorganisms, and allergies are the consequence.
To see if this theory played out in the real world, Horizon put the lives of two allergic families under the microscope.
The results were incredible. Like most of us in the Western world, the families had far fewer types of bacteria living in and on them when compared with people in traditional tribes in parts of the developing world. One hunter-gatherer community was found to not only have a higher diversity of bacteria, but only one in 1,500 suffered from an allergy - compared with one in three in the UK.
Life in the West appears to be changing our bacteria and susceptibility to allergy. But what is it about the Western lifestyle that is to blame?
There are likely to be many culprits, but a big factor could be how we are bringing up our children.
The immune system is strengthened by exposure to bacteria at an early age, and the more, the better. We've known this for centuries. But now we've got a bunch of soft arse kids out there sashaying around their sterile homes. Little Billy isn't even allowed to pet the dog without taking a shower afterwards. Got parents with babies making sure everyone who comes to visit has had the full range of immunizations. It's no wonder your kid can't eat a ham sammich without going into shock.
I have a theory on this, but it's not for the faint of heart. It is, however, based on evolutionary principles:
If you can't eat bread, peanuts, fish, or drink a Coca Cola without your body shutting down, then we have to let you go. I'm sorry, but we have to let nature take its course. You weren't meant to make it. All we're doing by keeping you alive is perpetuating this cycle of progeny who can't eat food.

I thank God often that my son does not have any food allergies

Idk anyone with a food allergy.

I would think allergies stem from all the chemicals that are in our foods.
Side note: if you can die from just being close to a peanut, then maybe you serve no purpose on this planet, just like the rest of us. -some comedian

Yeah, that's not how it works.
I agree with you about the peanuts though.

Nothing wrong with that.

I always felt so bad for the formula kids. They were so small and allergic to everything

Wow, all this time I thought allergies were caused by an hyperactive immune system. Thanks pecker, for teaching me that it's because of weak immune systems unable to fight that evil peanut butter off. All these weak kids immune systems are losing battles with peanut butter, who knew?

Peanut butter was invented by the government to keep the white man down just like heroin

Our daughter is anaphylactic to cashews and pistachios and we definitely aren't crazy sterile people. No idea what caused it but it's very scary.

I had a friend come over for a get together with his son. Asked if the gumbo had shrimp in it, I said no why does jr have a shellfish allergy?
Oh no, they don't know if he does so they just don't let him eat seafood.

One of these is not like the others.

My wife is guilty of this...
She doesn't ascribe to the 3 second rule.

Yes, research shows that keeping babies away from peanuts actually increases the chance of a sensitivity to them.

My case study:
1. My kids: rarely gave them medication as they grew up. Young adults now, healthy.
2. Sister in law, who is a germophobe and hypochondriac, gave her child antibiotics every day for every snifflehe had.
Young adult now, still plagued with off sicknesses

They should be exposed to as many different types of foods as early as possible.
Truth. My wife and I are being proactive about this. We often go to buffets and load up a plate with various foods and give it to our infant. We don’t eat there though since buffets are trashy.

Yep. Antibiotics at an early age are terrible for the development of a child's immune system. It's tough because I know parents want to protect their kids but they aren't thinking rationally. Throughout history we had kids being born in mud huts with no access to antibiotics and we made it to this point just fine. In many parts of the world this is still the case. And no, I'm not making a case against vaccines.

Not that I disagree with you, but let's be fair. The infant mortality rate is much lower in modern times and in civilized countries.
We gave our infant one round of antibiotics when he had dual ear infections this past fall, but the Drs are willing to throw antibiotics at any fever that babies get. Even viral illnesses.
I was shocked by the number of parents I heard talking about giving their babies antibiotics for a flu, rsv, etc... diagnosis.
