My wife and I both have 2019 GMC vehicles and we both bought extended warranties. Each of our vehicles were in the shop no less than 5 times for large jobs while under warranty. Since the warranties expired back in 2023/2024 we've both had major transmission work done that was not covered by warranty. Her A/C also just went out (for the 2nd time) and the dealership wants $5500 to fix it. frick GM

Moral of the story is NOT buy a warranty, but rather don't buy GM

There are dealerships that sell non-manufacturer warranties and they will tell you that you have to buy it at the time of the car purchase which may be true. However, you can purchase a manufacturer warranty from almost any dealership after you purchase your car. There is a limit on time so do your research. I’m not sure if all brands are this way but I know many are.

Proper maintenance and care will eliminate most of your problems. 10 year old Mazda 6 going strong with over 100K miles.

I can say without a shadow of doubt, that the companies that sell extended warranties are NOT losing money on them. Worth it for the company? Yes. Worth it for the consumer? No

To be clear, I am talking about automaker OEM warranties, NOT 3rd party warranty companies, because they do definitely come out ahead.

With most of the automakers, it is the selling dealer that makes bank, the OEM statistically comes out a bit ahead because so many vehicles go out of service for various reasons - accidents, hail, theft, and most people forget to ask for their pro-rated $ back. By shopping for a dealer that sells the OEM warranty cheap, you shift the odds of coming out ahead in your favor.

I got a warranty at a Honda Dealership about 30 minutes from my home when I bought a used Honda. They worked it out for me to pay very little some kind of way. I had some mechanical problems and took it to a local Honda dealership. They didn’t want to cover it. I had to complain to the main dealership(where I bought the vehicle) and the warranty company. It was a headache and I was notified the my hometown dealership was in the wrong. They refused to honor the warranty. I tell them that story every time they tell me the warranty is good at any “fill in the blank_______” dealership. I also pass on the warranties.

Was the warranty a Honda warranty?

Also have a 2019 but never gone to the shop. What were the issues?

Never use the dealership once the warranty is gone.
I've gotten similar quotes from other mechanics. Evaporator core needs replacing and apparently they have to tear the entire front end apart. 30+ hours of labor

you need that fricking extended warranty. The technology on vehicles today is out of control

I just purchased a new Tacoma. For the extended warranty, they wanted to charge me $2200. I told them absolutely NO. He then tells me, "How about $2000" . I told the guy, I don't purchase extended warranties on anything. Houses, vehicles, computers...they all come with a manufacture's warranty or new construction home warranty. The reason I buy from those manufactures are because they make quality products. Anything beyond the manufacture warranty, I can "self-insure" it myself..

In general, extended warranties are basically good for the people that sell them. All I know is that the car salesman gets a 5% cut and the other guy actually selling it to you gets a hell of a commission. When he started telling what it covers, i politely stopped him and asked:

"just tell me what it doesn't cover. Lets say my vehicle has a small dent on the front bumper. A year later, I come in with an A/C problem or a radiator problem. Will the extended warranty cover it?"

He couldn't say yes or no.

This is exactly why I do not purchase these outrageously priced extended warranties on a vehicle. In my eyes, I'd rather have 2200 in the bank for out of warranty repairs. If it gets depleted or has to get things fixed to often, then I will get rid of the vehicle. This is my 4th Tacoma and I am very familiar with the quality. I have never had any issues with any of my previous Tacoma trucks and never had extended warranties on any of them...

Good luck selling those trash warranties bro!

Lemme tell you a secret - they wouldnt sell extended warranties if they weren't profitable.

They are insanely profitable, because selling a $4k warranty that only pays out $1200 in repairs that are really $500 repairs at internal cost is a damn lucrative business.

Those of you have or considering an extended warranty, read the fine print on what is covered with AC repairs, especially with regards to compressor failure.
There are many related parts that may need to be replaced at the same time which may or may not be covered in the policy.

So you’re betting that the vehicle you buy is going to have problems. Buy yourself a Ford or Toyota and forget about the extended warranty.
180k miles on my F150 with no major issues. 100,000 mile extended warranty would have been wasted money.

The majority of the warranties sold on vehicles are held by third party companies. So it can become a battle when you actually try to use some of these.

That being said, I generally forgo any type of extended warranty since on any new vehicle it is covered by the manufacturer for when generally the first problems arise. Once those are worked out, most modern cars from Toyota/Honda/Mazda can easily go to 100K miles without any major issues.

Most extended warranties are covering the portion of ownership with the lowest amount of issues

Darth, the only posts I’ve downvoted in this thread is yours baw….BTW, the disinformation in this thread is unreal lol….what’s funny is, all you hard cases who “self insure” all buy warranties for your iPhones at a cost of roughly 10% of the value of the product, and yet you’re bagging on folks who spend 2k for protection on a $70,000 car.

The extended warranty on my Ram was around $5K, IIRC. The price to cover the bad lifer atter less than a year was around $5k. I am a fan of the extended warranty on vehicles.

My numbers might be off, but the warranty paid for itself.

The chances of you getting more out of a warranty than you put in are very low. Without suckers like you, warranties wouldn’t exist.
