and how many of those weren't over the age of 60? the majority of those 80,000 i'd identify as dying of old age.
People between the ages of 20-40 aren't dying from the flu. Not saying it never happens, but that percent of people is ridiculously low.
just more scare tactics here.
I bet if you ran a poll just on this website on how many people know someone personally that has died from the flu, that number would be a lot less than the number of people that know someone personally that has died in a car accident.

Imagine how much less that number would have been if everyone just got their flu shots? Even if the shot isn't as effective as it usually is (like last season's shot).

And how many of those were children? Getting the flu from those pussies who don't like needles?
What a fricking dumbass.

172 children died from the flu last flu season in the U.S. 80% of those children had not received the flu shot.
These are record high numbers for children in the U.S. dying from the flu during a flu season.

A little bit of protection against the flu is better than no protection.
And yes...80k people died from the flu in the U.S. last flu season.

AN ESTIMATED 80,000 people died of the flu and complications arising from the virus last winter, making it the deadliest flu season in at least 40 years.
Dr. Robert Redfield, director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced the number in an interview with the Associated Press. In recent flu seasons, deaths from the virus have ranged from about 12,000 to 56,000. Complications that can arise from the flu and result in death include stroke, heart attack and pneumonia.
The United States experienced an especially bad season last winter, driven by a particularly severe strain of the virus that led to more hospitalizations and deaths, especially among children and older people. In addition to a nasty strain, the flu vaccines weren't very effective, according to the AP.
Despite that, it is still important to get vaccinated, as it makes the flu less severe, and Redfield told the AP that he would "like to see more people get vaccinated."

old people die. it's what they do. The flu shot isn't going to save them. If the flu didn't kill them, the cold they got a week later was going to eventually turn into pneumonia and kill them.
I'm not saying children and elderly shouldn't get the flu shot. But don't bark at healthy adults to go get the flu shot. It does next to nothing for them, assuming the flu shot that year was even an effective one, and last year it was not effective.
If a "healthy" adult is dying from the flu, they either weren't that healthy or did something stupid. shite happens. If we did every little minor thing to prevent us from dying prematurely, we'd live in bubbles breathing filtered air never coming in physical contact with anything in the world.
How many lives would be saved if everyone wore a helmet when they drove, and we all sat in kid like car seats our whole lives?

You do realize the flu is spread from person to person? The flu shot for a healthy adult protects them from the flu. And if they get the flu...they get a less severe version of it.
But it also protects those around them. If you get your flu shot...you are less likely to get the flu and SPREAD the flu to those around you. Like your kids, your babies, or your elderly relatives.
If everyone got the flu shot...that would mean less people getting the flu and less people spreading the flu around.
I'm sorry you clearly are not intelligent enough to grasp this very basic concept.

So, 79,828 old people died from the flu last year, while only 172 people under 65 did?
If I died from massive head trauma that was received when I was going to puke, could that be recorded as me dying from the flu?
Eta: Sorry, I would've died from "complications from the flu"

Wow you really are an idiot.
172 children died. Not 172 people under the age of 65. I'm under the age of 65...does that make me a child in your logic?
You realize a child is someone under 18?

am i? or am i less likely to get a severe flu? Most of the stuff you read states that the vaccine helps prevent hospital visits, not that it helps prevent you from getting the flu. I could be wrong there, honestly don't know, but that's how it has always read to me. It would help if they were open and honest about the stats instead of trying to scare people into them. I guess telling America that a couple hundred non elderly people died from the flu last year isn't as catchy as 80,000 people died.
see this little nugget you left out of your 172 child deaths.
quote:
About half the children who died had another health condition, but half did not. “Most children died within seven days of symptom onset,” the CDC said.
quote:
SPREAD the flu to those around you. Like your kids, your babies, or your elderly relatives.
i know when im sick, i generally like to visit relatives with babies and old people.
If by some miracle i get the flu, something i've never had in my life, i'll simply go to the doctor and get some tamiflu and be just fine.
Ya'll make it sound like everyone dies from the flu, yet i know of no one that has ever died from the flu, but given your statistics, i should, given the fact that i know multiple people that have died in car accidents. That is why healthy adults don't go get the flu shot. The number of healthy adults, and even health children that die from it are very very low.
all that being said, i would agree that everyone should get a flu shot, but i'm still not going to b/c i don't feel like going to the doctor and waste my time. When i used to work in an office and my work would set up someone to come by and administer it, i'd get it, but i only worked in the office for a year, so that was the only time i've gotten a flu shot as an adult.

You can pass on the flu before you start experiencing any symptoms

you'd think before the invention of the flu vaccine more kids died.
