Brightline is a great ride - used it a couple of times down there. It is a lot nicer than Amtrak.

Really hope they figure it out. I think they bit off more than they can chew with the amenities and building their own ROW.

Thinking they ultimately get bought by the state of FL.

This was the plan all along, I am in Tampa at least once a year and would love a better way of traveling than using I-4.

That's not high speed. Seoul to Busan is nearly 200mph. And, just like the "why aren't we more like Europe" dumbshits that advocate for "high" speed rail between Houston and Dallas, they discount minor things like the fact that there is a Southwest flight every 30 freaking minutes between the two.

Brightline trains in Florida can reach maximum speeds of 125 mph on certain segments, specifically between Cocoa and Orlando, while operating at lower speeds of 79 mph between Miami and West Palm Beach. The average journey time from Miami to Orlando is approximately 3.5 hours

I4 stretch from Orlando to Tampa is the worst. Used to be such an easy drive and now I dread it every time I gotta do it. Doesn’t matter the time either.

My group of people there is located south of I4 so I can usually save some time by taking 60.

I’m on it right now. It’s not pretty full. Beats driving from Fort Lauderdale to Miami any day.

Also, dumb fricking people get hit by the train that moves in the same line. Stop blaming the train.

Good idea.

It’s really the champions gate area that is mostly the problem.

At that speed, you could just fly there, if TSA PreCheck can get you in less than an hour before departure, but with having to arrive 2 hours ahead that gets rid of any time adavantage, but ground transportation will never beat the speed and ease of air travel.

I wonder if anyone figured out the fuel or electric consumption and compared air travel to a train or even a car.

As I said in a previous I post, I ride the Amtrak fairly often, ab 400 miles one way, I can work from the train, it’s about an hour longer than driving and $31, which is ab 2.5x cheaper than driving if you’re getting 20mpg, not sure how that compares to flying but the two locations i travel between do not have direct flights. There is also zero security check so you literally just show up and walk on the train, can bring whatever you want on there food and drink wise, and it’s insanely comfortable.

I ride Amtrak’s Crescent 20 and 19 pretty often

Any tips, suggestions for a long ride on the Crescent?

I’ve done Amtrak in the NE corridor, the crescent on a short ride from Wilmington to DC, and the Mardi Gras Express, but will be taking my first longer trip (8 hours) on the Crescent at the end of the month.

Where is the best spot to set up for a trip that long?

I could see the use for out of town people without a car that would want to go to Miami.

Otherwise kinda useless, plus flying into mia is super cheap so maybe you could use it like that to go to Orlando.

That is pretty similar to the length of the trips I take. Are you trying to work or relax on the trip? I have a portable monitor and usually get set up in the cafe car shortly into the trip. I buy a couple things and tip the Amtrak worker guy and they are always really nice and let me work back there for as long as i want.

The wifi is usually good enough for emails, i do lose service sometimes usually bw Meridian and Tuscaloosa but can always at least send an email, streaming sports events goes in and out along this route but its not a terribly long distance to manage.

I usually also pack a lunch, as the food is pretty shitty and includes microwaved hot dogs, hamburgers and pre made sandwiches. They may say something if you bring your food into the cafe car but can literally bring on an ice chest and crush beers in your coach seat the entire trip. I will try to think of any additional tips but let me know if you have any other questions. I have never got a roomette or bedroom before, as the cost is pretty outrageous and doesnt make much sense for a trip of that length when you have a really big/roomy coach seat and access to the cafe car, which is a bunch of 4 person cafe style booths

Thanks! That is pretty much what I was looking for. I won’t be doing much work hopefully, just relaxing.

Is one coach car better than another?

No problem, if you get coach they dont really give you an option depending on where you get on, if you are traveling solo they may try to sit you next to someone at first, depending on how full they are that day, but can usually move around as people get off. i have never had to sit next to someone the entire trip

additionally, freight plays a role in the travel time on that route, so have been an entire hour early some trips but usually never more than a few minutes late

How much of the $50B in subsidies Amtrak has gotten factor into that?

It helps not to live in a backwater if you travel regularly.

The entire point of the post was to show that the Brightline can't sustain itself. Case closed.

a lot, is that a bad thing that the govt is spending tax payer dollars on something that actually benefits its taxpayers?

lmfao not backwater city at all, just not a huge city

And no one argued that it could sustain itself, i wish the government would give them money to exist and expand

Baton Rouge, Lafayette, Athens, Stillwater, etc. are backwaters. Live at a hub like a man.
