Same here…but I can negotiate.
5 million plus relocation costs.
Stick that in the bank or a trust fund and live off the interest.

We had a dentist do this in St.Louis where they built a mall around him and stuck him 10 feet below grade.
He eventually gave up and sold out to a Texas Roadhouse.

A guy I used to work with lived in a Mossville neighborhood. When SASOL bought up everyone’s homes and cleared them, his was the last house still standing. The bulldozers and dump trucks were steadily moving dirt on the acreage around him. He held out for months until they finally paid him. He didn’t get as much as he wanted but he had to choose between the last offer and imminent domain.
When Conoco (now Phillips66) bought Trusdale (sp?) road and the land/homes west of it for their tank farm, there were several holdouts. The problem with them was that they didn’t own the homes. The banks did because of default. They were basically just squatting. I wasn’t on site that day but sherif deputies told one of the equipment operators to “clip” one of the homes. The operator walked his D6 up and took out the corner of the home and the squatters came running out and we’re arrested.

His family paid $130,000 for it on 6/1/1989.
Good investment.
Good investment.

The story made it sound like his family bought this home in 1935. 1989? My parents bought their home in 1986 and I would drop it in a second. 1989…

Now that they have built around it you really cant do much with the property should he sell it. Maybe a small restaurant or green space but aint nobody building a tower on that plot now.

This is stupid. I don't understand people like this. It's just a building.

I'd like to see his "get off my lawn" face.

On the bright side (no pun intended), at least it will be easy to sleep in without any sunlight hitting the windows.

I am sure his parents would be OK with him taking $900k and moving on before the city takes it using eminent domain.
They would have to give fair market value. With those buildings all around, each one increases that value tremendously. This is a development a bit like Perkins Rowe but more upscale while not as large. 1BR/1BA apartments (659sqft) start at $2,268/month.
If they try to expropriate then they have to take into account the adjoining properties, even if zoned differently, and their values (although the different zoning and type will deduct from the final price). I wouldn't be shocked to find out that -if this happened- he would end up with more than $900k.

any BAW's work on the SASOL expansion a few years back in Lake Charles? One land owner did the same thing. He had a shack and surrounded it with a wooden fence.

You know many Cubans who fled Castro in 1935?

Reminds me of the Japanese Farmer that refused to sell when Tokyo was building Narita Airport, they basically built the airport around his little farm.

Only one thing left to do.

He also never has to worry about hurricane force winds.

When I lived in Houston, something similar happened to an old lady in the Heights. She refused to sell and then went missing shortly after the new development opened. Someone else bought the home and made it a rental. The new tenants found the old lady's bones in the wall shortly after they moved in -- she apparently fell between the walls while in the attic and died in there. They tore it down and built some new townhomes.
