There were lots of witnesses. One guy on the local news said he heard, then saw, what he thought was large fireworks in the distance. Moments later the plane blew up. He seemed like a normal dude to me.
Had lots of in-laws on Long Island at the time. Many direct accounts within that circle. That stretch of beach is very popular and it was a beautiful beach day. Local news covered it in detail, but the "investigators" weren't interested in a raft of direct eye witness testimony.

Not sure if serious.

This helps the story out

Lots of witnesses on the beach on in boats on the water saw explode. That animation is simply wrong.

Absolutely serious. Frank was a straight shooter. He was years older than I was. He was old enough to have witnessed the first video tape machine rolled out at NAB in 1956. It nearly caused a riot when the engineers thought they were being scammed until the curtain opened on an Ampex quad.

There are no words. I can’t imagine the terror and fear those passengers experienced if any alive as plane hit water. The crew cabin. I don’t fly anymore but if I did and saw this I’d
probably quit.
probably quit.

Sounds like a very reputable source. Was the drunk cousin also the one who told Pierre Salinger?

I think in this case "investigators" should always be in quotes. I speculate that a slow moving 747 at 10,000 ft is a fat target for a modern missile. A missile, especially with radar targeting would hit center mass rather easily. The "investigators" report said that it was the center fuel tank that exploded. Even an unarmed missile hitting the center tank would cause a major explosion.

I doubt it, but a lot of people on the Navy side who were involved in the accident had to know. There had to be a lot of guilty consciences.

Electrical short makes an explosion with highly volatile jet fuel and air mixture.
Why is this so hard to believe?
Jet fuel is not highly volatile. Throw a match in it and the match goes out. You'd have to turn it into a fine mist to ignite with a spark or even a match. There was no turbulence on that fateful day. It was a beautiful calm day.

Lockerbie bombing too. A couple of people survived all the way to the ground and were found strapped into their seats but died before anyone could help them.

Jet fuel isn’t that volatile. You could throw a lit cigarette into a 5gal bucket full of jet-a and it wouldn’t catch fire.
Jet fuel is less volatile than the gasoline we put in our cars.

This was the mid-1990's. The Cold War was over and 9/11 hadn't happened. Had the investigation uncovered that our military was responsible for the deaths of 230 people, the consequences would have been serious and far-reaching. I don't think it's a stretch to suggest that this is a potential "fox guarding the henhouse" situation when it comes to the parallel investigations by the NTSB and FBI.

Jet fuel is basically a kerosene. To ignite it with a match or a spark it has to be either misted or very hot. There was no turbulence the day Flight 800 exploded.
It would be hard to find anyone from Long Island who believes the "investigators" tale.

Exactly, that’s why the wreckage from this “electrical accident” sat in a warehouse in a DC suburb for 20 years.

I have a client who worked for the Port Authority in NYC before retiring down here. I never knew this before meeting him, but the Port Authority owned the hotel that became the gathering place for the victims families. Apparently a few of his buddies were sent there to assist with things (it was probably a zoo there with families and media). His buddies wound up speaking to the families of some of the victims and apparently many of them were pissed, from the get-go, about the lack of cooperation and information being provided. He thinks it was a missile as well.

IMO it was a terrorist attack. They found residue from plastic explosives in early reports but that quickly disappeared. Probably an early AQ attack to bring down an airliner.

Odd choice of music to put over this animation. Waaaay to relaxing for something so chaotic. I would have chosen this…

You keep bringing up this completely irrelevant point, it's jet fuel vapors in the tank that are easily ignitable and highly flammable.
