A number of years ago my then 86 y/o dad got flesh eating bacteria in his left leg/foot. At his house !
He was very fortunate to keep his leg. He had at least 3 different surgeries to remove the infected flesh. He even had gotten septic. He had a great surgeon and even better nurses. All in a tiny town. He stayed in the hospital for exactly 1 month. including rehab.
While he was in the hospital I was responsible for mowing his lawn, etc. One day after i finished mowing his lawn I thought to myself how in the hell does one get flesh eating bacteria at his own house? While walking around his house I spotted it. He would keep his old, dirty, nasty arse tennis shoes that he would use for garden/ lawn work on the window sill under his patio cover. I walked up and looked inside and the shoes were absolutely disgusting. moist.nasty. dirty. I feel 100% positive thats where it came from. he probably had a small cut on his foot and the bacteria got in that way. And his surgeon agreed. After that I threw away every pair of shoes he had. lol
He wasn't too thrilled about it but I didn't care. lol
I've done forgot the name of the bacteria. But his surgeon did say that it was violet in color under a microscope.

Medicine resistant staph is essentially the same thing in terms of the damage it can do and most people barely bat an eye worrying about it when it is far more common

I have a relative in south Mississippi who scraped his leg on his boat trailer (not even in the water) which resulted in a vibrio infection. He passed away not long after. I think he used peroxide on the cut which didn’t get rid of it. From what I’ve read, something like Vashe Wound Solution is better suited for cleaning a cut where Vibrio is concerned.

I've carried Betadine with me when kayak fishing in the marsh, and used that immediately in any cut or scrape.
A bunch of my friends did the same, and some carried strong Clorox solutions (Clorox and water, not sure about their ratio).

We have a pond and my kids used to swim in it a lot. Now I only let them after essentially a hurricane or major flood, something to turn the pond over. Even then I don't if they have any cuts.
