I live in NY, and my car cannot pass the emissions test since its got a "Check Engine" light on (even though it runs great), and I'll have to spend thousands getting it fixed.

On the internet I've learned that some states do not require an emissions test i.e. FL, AL, SC etc., so am thinking about selling my car there.

Just need to confirm if true.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, but no one in NY will buy it with the "check engine" light on.

why don't you take it to an O'Reilly's or AutoZone and have them put their analyzer on it, it's free, might be a quick fix

Can confirm, no emission testing in Alabama. No city here requires it either.

AL doesn't need one. I lived in GA most of my life and they do require which is a PITA. Registered my car here in AL and it was no problem.

Granted, I have no idea on all the specs like if tis' needed for certain year ranges or something like that. I just know me nor my wife needed one.

Anytime my check engine light has come on it was the O2 sensor, which I bought online for $30 and installed myself.

Have you actually taken a look at why the light is on?

This is correct for Georgia. It's required for Atlanta and some of the surrounding counties but the rest of the state it is not

Yup. The timing belt tore up, and apparently part of it ended up hitting or getting lodged in the engine. Which is throwing off the diagnostics.

I drove it for over two years since this happened, with zero issues, but unfortunately the emissions tests are structured so that they cannot proceed until the light is off.

It varies by county in Texas. Harris County (Houston) requires it but Chambers County right next door does not.

So what’s actually wrong?

ETA I see he addressed it.

Good luck selling when you tell someone why the CE light is on.

yep, seems a bit extreme to try to sell your car out of state, particularly when none of the states are close to you to avoid spending a few bucks to fix it, let alone not even trying to find out what's wrong with it
