The timing belt tore up, and apparently part of it ended up hitting or getting lodged in the engine. Which is throwing off the diagnostics.

This sounds dubious. What kinda of car? Timing belt broke and apparently it's a non interference motor? Mazda 1.8l?

2008 BMW 3. Had a few reliable mechanics check, and even BMW tech check it.

Will cost $4-5 K to open it up and fix!!

Not worth it.

Can confirm AL does not do any state inspections on vehicles.

Oof. If it's a manual trans, non sunroof car may check with the race car folks in your area.

I think the only place in the Nola metro that does it is Kenner. And I could be wrong on that.

Yes, but no one in NY will buy it with the "check engine" light on.

Do you think the south is nothing but dumb rednecks that will just buy you car without finding out what the light is on for?

Check engine light and emissions test are not the same thing.

Wow. You're sensitive.
In NY, you can't pass the emissions test, so can't drive the car.
There are some specific states in the south (if you read my post) that don't have this requirement, so the car has more value in those states.

Car runs great, no issues. Just a stupid governmental requirement.
