17 years later and we still haven’t prosecuted 5 terrorists involved in the attack.

quote:

At the U.S. Navy base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, a $12 million courtroom sits empty on an abandoned runway.

The Expeditionary Legal Complex was built in 2007 in the expectation it would be used for the trial of terrorists accused of murdering nearly 3,000 people with twin attacks on New York and Washington on September 11, 2001. But 10 years later, and 16 years after 9/11, no one has been brought to trial in that courtroom.

Five defendants sit in a high-security prison nearby, waiting for a court date that is perpetually delayed. Meanwhile, the bill to the U.S. taxpayer has reached an estimated $300 million.

Late 2017 article but they are still sitting there

I’m ok with using $300M to serve those cock suckers meat cock sandwiches everyday for the last 17 years. They should live in perpetual pain and misery until they are on their death bed, and then we should throw them off the World Trade Center to their death after lighting them on fire.

I would hope they aren't having a particularly enjoyable life while waiting

quote:

Such delays have been typical for the case. It has jumped from court to court, from military to civilian to military, since the first charges were brought in military court in June 2008 during the Bush administration.

The Obama administration then decided to review the case and in January 2010 withdrew the military charges. Eric Holder, President Obama's attorney general, wanted the defendants put on trial in U.S. District Court in Manhattan, blocks away from the site of the World Trade Center.

Strong objections, based on alleged security issues, led Holder to drop that idea and new charge sheets were issued in May 2011 at the military commission. A year later, there was a new arraignment at Guantanamo. It lasted 13 hours, with time off for the defendants to pray in the courtroom.

Seems like a thanks Obama would be appropriate.

Because it was never envisioned that they'd have a trial at the time they were captured. They are enemy combatants captured as a result of an intelligence operation, not criminal defendants captured as the result of a law enforcement investigation.

The correct answer here is... fricking lawyers. I bet they are billing by the hour.

Why should we hold trials? We should hack into every country’s cable and film 5 executions in the most medieval fashion possible while the world watches. Shove hog nuts down their throat and drown them in pig’s blood when they’re begging for mercy.

I’m of this opinion as well. These are people that want to die for their jihad. The cost is absurd, but in principle I have no issue with them living life out in seclusion.

I’m ok with this

In fact, I hope every day that the guards tell them “today’s the day, prepare for your hearing” and just leave them to sit there all day inside the courtroom

Yea, when you buy 150, 500, 1000 rounds at a time.

When the US gov is buying it in bulk, it may even be less than $0.20 a round.

I say let them go. They've served their time. Release them to go home. Why spend more money at this point.

Open the cells, walk them to the edge of the water, tell them they are free to go home and to start swimming.

If they make it, they make it and are free...

If not, o well.
