the first thing I did when I bought our house 16 years ago was cut down the 2 Bradford pears in the front yard

of course, being a dumb person, I planted 2 river birches in their place, which are only marginally better in that they don't split in half, they just shed limbs and bark non stop

There was a big fight on our HOA Facebook page a few years ago. Some vigilante came in the middle of the night with a chainsaw and cut a Bradford pear down to the ground, had everything removed by the next morning when people were waking up. No one admitted to it. Some people were pissed because it was in a common area of the neighborhood but it was probably a few days from splitting in half, no exaggeration.

Bradford Pears + Ice Storms = Massive Power Lines Down

Builders used them because they were cheap and grew fast but if you live in an ice prone area, tear them puppies out.

I feel you there. Picking up branches nonstop - especially when it’s hot.

Any tree that attracts flies instead of bees to pollinate shouldn't be near your home. They're beautiful when in bloom but they smell like dead fish and piss.

Best way to trim them is to take a chainsaw and make a horizontal cut about three inches above the soil.

We have a river birch in ours as well. I just consider it adding steps to my daily step count.

It is awfully pretty in the fall when it's that lovely golden yellow color. And I will say that aside from it shedding some smaller branches, the larger ones handle wind pretty well.

I don't think stinky trees are a first world problem.

My neighbor has one right at the fence line. The flowers start falling off and clog up my pool skimmer baskets. Is that better?

At my age it is on my cardio routine

Stick pick up (with the grabber)
Poop pick up (mini rake and pan)
Dandelion eradication (this is high season)
Walking to mailbox and back
Keeping up with the neighbor widows

Deer won't even eat the pears.

Well, birds sure the hell do but the fruit give them explosive diarrhea. Anyone still having these abominations in their yard deserves to have bird shite all over their sidewalks.

Which is worse: Bodarks or Bradford Pears?
