Dont be a pussy!!!Its hand surgery, not brain surgery. You'll be fine, unless you're not. lol

I first went under the knife at age 42 and over the past 24 years since then I've had 6 surgeries that required me to be put under.
They'll take you in the pre-op/prep area where you'll get undressed and grab a bed. Then prior to being wheeled into surgery they'll hook you up with an IV and just before heading into, or shortly after in the OR the anesthesiologist will hit you with something to relax you, and you will be relaxed. Then he'll say he's going to hit you with something to put you under and that's all you'll remember until you wake up in recovery.
Piece of cake really.

It's normal to be nervous when you have never had surgery before.

This. I love the cold feeling going up my arm when they push it in. Tell them you get nauseous and they will put some stuff in it so your stomach doesn't go haywire when you wake up. I never puke other than when I wake up from anesthesia. Haven't the last few times since I started telling them.

If its hand surgery, you may get a regional block to numb your arm and hand for surgery, then the CRNA, or anesthesia resident depending on where you are, can sedate you with propofol for the case. Either way you are asleep but the block and propofol infusion is better because you avoid the breathing tube and those issues and side effects of anesthesia gas which is delerium and nausea. Propofol believe it or not is a very potent anti emetic.

Truth. If they ever figure out how to bottle that up we will finally have world peace.

I went into my neck surgery nervous and crying and came out of it throwing up. Do you know how you react to pain meds? Most things knock me out, but I learned that dilauded makes me throw my guts up. Ask everything before and don’t assume anything. I assumed they were cutting the back of my neck and when I learned they were cutting the front I lost it. It wouldn’t have really mattered, but in that moment it made me feel like I didn’t know what was going on.
Good luck. I hope it’s smooth sailing for you!

Going under and coming out sucks big time.

Don’t be surprised if it takes a day or two for the anesthesia to fully be gone from your lungs. That’s natural. Also the ice chips they give you in recovery will fill like the best thing you have ever eaten

The worst part is when the nurse removes the catheter after you wake up.

For them or me?

Is Dr. Death your surgeon?

There’s a slim chance the anesthesia won’t work properly and you’ll be awak while they cut you up

Depends on the surgery really. The most disconcerting thing for me is when the chick assissiting asked which side they were operating on. I was like, don’t you fricking know? Then, when I said what side, she took out a fricking marker and made a big X where they were doing surgery. Not exactly a vote of confidence.

I'd rather them be sure it's the correct location lol. To the OP, what kind of hand surgery are you having?

Crna here. No catheter in your pee hole for that kinda case.

Best way to describe it. For me at least, on the way to passing out, my heart started racing.
