For the first time in my life, I’ll be going under the knife. What should I expect? Minor surgery IMO (hand). Doc says procedure should be about 30 min. They are knocking me out before hand and I’m slightly worried as I’ve never had to do that before.

Tips?

Already have someone lined up to delete my browser history if I don’t make it.

Oh man when the anesthesia hits, my god. It’s the best feeling but it last like five seconds and you black out. Then they will wake you up and it will all be over.

After that, hope you get a cute nurse in the med surg unit

I'd record the whole procedure so I'd know just what I confessed to, opined on, and proposed.

Follow the preop instructions they gave you.

If they say nothing to eat or drink after midnight...follow that. It's for your safety.

I'm assuming this is outpatient surgery? Buy some bland stuff from the store to eat tomorrow (jello, crackers, mashed potatoes, etc). Some people get really nauseated from the anesthesia so you want to eat some bland stuff first to make sure you don't get sick.

Also...buy some ice cream. Your throat might be really sore after surgery from the breathing tube they insert prior to surgery.

If you take pain meds, make sure you take stool softener or you’ll be in a world of hurt.

The pre surgery enema is usually the worst part. Smooth sailing after that.

Expect to be asleep
Expect the doctor to do a good job
Expect to wake up

What are they doing to your hand that they are putting you completely under??? Seems like a big risk when a local with a screen would work

Say a few prayers and get your affairs in order

You never know what will happen when you go under the knife

I’ll say a prayer for you

Once they hit you with the anesthesia you won’t feel or remember anything. Hopefully you’ll have a hot nurse sticking the catheter up your pee pee hole.

If you are healthy, there is nothing to worry about. They’ll give you Versed and you won’t remember anything fatter that.

Yes, that's a great suggestion. Thankfully I never had to ask...they automatically gave it to me.

OP...they can give you something to relax you prior to wheeling you back. I remember how nervous I was the first time. They could tell I was anxious and gave me some versed and then I felt wonderful

Seriously though...it really is like you are awake...then out...then you wake up in recovery.

Going out is extremely peaceful. In fact, if dying is like anesthesia then we have nothing to fear about death. It will happen so fast you won’t even know it.
