Yeah, a new bridge and a loop would be ideal, but nobody wants to be taxed to pay for it.

It will be a shitty 5 years during construction, but I'm ecstatic.

ETA: My apologies for Germans. I have a job and a mistress.

I hate to ruin the surprise but this will do nothing. The bottlenecks will still stop up the extra lanes. And the Washington St exit will still frick up everything coming off the bridge.

Without a loop, widening 10 is just a way for the state to give some road construction company a shite ton of money.

Sorry to be the Debbie Downer :(

Washington is being moved to be an exit from 110 instead of i10. Washington won’t be a problem anymore.

Did you just forget about the widening project from the split to highland just 6 years ago?

First time I've been to OT Lounge about it, saw there was a presser about it yesterday. Is this going to be a good deal for us?

Massively good deal, but it will hurt like a mother to get there.

DOTD seems to think they already have enough space in the existing right of way so as not to have to take in any existing businesses around the overpass area, but I’m skeptical to say the least.

This should be a huge improvement for eastbound traffic coming over the bridge and down 110 from downtown, but I don’t see it doing much for westbound traffic.

Is there anyway to bookmark threads for 5 years so I can see how y’all feel about this later on?

Unfortunately I agree. People think adding lanes to existing roads is the solution to every traffic problem when a lot of times it isn’t.

I-10 widening in Baton Rouge will take at least 5 years as part of $600 million transportation overhaul

Agreed, but what will be is all that free-flowing WB Perkins Road on-ramp traffic that now will be funneled into the Acadian intersection.

In this circumstance, where I-10 east goes down to one lane coming off the bridge, maintaining an extra lane will greatly reduce the current bottleneck and is 100% necessary.

I always here the argument that widening never keeps up with increasing demand, so we’re better off not doing it. That argument is based on a false assumption that those new cars are coming out of nowhere because the widening occurred, like everyone suddenly bought an extra car iust to drive it on the widened interstate. It’s bullshite. Those cars were largely already in the system, they were just avoiding the clogged interstates like the plague while clogging up the less efficient surface streets. Widening the interstates causes those cars to now move to the interstates. Even when congestion remains the same on a widened interstate, the added capacity means that it is still moving more cars, even at the same slow speeds. Nearly all of those extra cars would have still been sitting in traffic pre-widening, just on surface streets like Perkins and Florida. By moving those cars to a more efficient system, congestion in the overall road grid goes down, commute times go down, and efficiency goes up with increased capacity.

Those who say “widening never works” are basically just buying a government propoganda point perpetuated by corrupt socialists who seek to steal highway money via studies and bullshite projects (road diets, sidewalks, greenways, bike trails, etc) so they won’t be held accountable for not building roads while they impede progress in the name of the environment.

It’s all a big socialist anti-capitalism, anti-industrialization conspiracy.

Project specific information on DOTD's site:

LINK

Looks very good and I think it will solve a lot of headaches for Baton Rouge.

It won't replace the need to improve Airline Highway, widen US 190 towards Hammond, or the need for a new bridge at Plaquemine.

Even the most nutty urban planner out there would agree that capacity enhancements like this are entirely appropriate. This is a textbook example of how additional capacity would provide huge relief.

That DOES NOT replace the need to improve alternative routes.

True... You damn sure notice an increase in congestion when they shut down a lane.... It's common sense
