Fighting with your SO/Wife/etc?

I was helping a friend who has been fighting with his wife for months about petty, stupid bullshite... they love each other too much to fight about so little.
Over a few beers, I offered an idea, or an "exercise" that might help... he loved it and I wanted to share and get some thoughts form the board.
I told him to call "timeout" or "pause" or whatever the hell ever, and take a walk. On this walk, pretend that you're her attorney. Pretend that you have to argue her case to a jury. You may not agree with it, but now it's your "job" to try to see it from her perspective.
And I told him to try it and he call me this morning and he said it was fantastic advice... so with that feedback, I wanted to see if it does in fact have any relationship counseling merit.
What are some things that you all do when you're fighting with your SO/Wife/etc?

Lol, it may work a time or two. But unless both do the same exercise (good luck with that) every time it won't work long term.
