I'll see if I can find the news story, but a few years ago the feds went scorched earth and started arresting people who went into default.

I missed a month or two when mine first when into payment (I was young and dumb and not paying attention) and my credit score tanked hard. Had a great job and credit history with ~500 score

I've always thought this. Its one huge scam. Theres a reason wall street loves Ivy league grads no matter what their background is...its all about power.
This is exactly why I support cryptocurrencies and hope and pray it takes hold.

Why do ppl treat single moms, teachers, etc as if they are special?
Exactly. Just because she is poor with her money and couldnt keep.her legs closed I'm supposed to mourn for her. You reap what you sow

IRS has gotten pretty aggressive over the last few years since they were told to cool their jets over some very questionable acts a while back, I think they need to be reeled back in a bit, except in this case
I'm going on 9 years, so far so good. :knocksonwood:

I bet a lot of that refund was from the earned income tax credit too.
Of course it was. Just based on how she looks we all know she majored in something worthless so she likely qualifies for it since sh makes 20K a year at Starbucks.

Sounds like she should adjust her w-4, so she can pay her bills throughout the year.
I would be willing to bet she filed exempt on her W4 for whatever job she may have. This "refund" is a combination of her EITC and refundable child tax credit. Her actual tax liability is likely negative. It's welfare without the stigma of calling it welfare.

The average check from the IRS in 2019 so far is $2,795, which represents six weeks of income for the typical family in the U.S.,
That's horrifying
also not true-
That's $465 a week or $24,180 a year. The average household income is more than twice that number, @ $61,000

If only there were a way this could have been avoided.

I got audited last year(for 2016,) those motherfrickers are Nazis, once they start digging they think everything is fair game, a couple of times I had to tell them(through my CPA,) to frick off, I'm not required to keep records that long, ended up going through '15 and '17 returns too

Intuit lobbied hard to kill the bill in California that would have provided pre-filled tax returns to California residents for their state tax returns. Under the bill, all the residents would have to do is look over their pre-filled return, sign it, and pay or receive a refund.
Of course, that would kill Intuit's tax software business and the bill was defeated.

They also successfully lobbied congress to make it illegal for the IRS to offer free tax filing online.
