of course she lives in a leftist enclave that is absurdly expensive due to the demand of her type flooding the city
also, of course, the author shows how absurd our tax system is
and, of course, she looks like a freak show
this story has EVERYTHING
quote:
As she scanned the letter's black type, Alexis Patterson felt herself go numb. "The U.S. Department of Treasury ... applied all or part of your payment to delinquent debt that you owe," it read.
Patterson stopped reading. One thing mattered now. The single mother would not receive her $3,063 tax refund, including her child tax credit. The government would instead apply the money to her past-due student loan account.

She and her 11-year-old daughter, Ophelia, have been homeless over the last few months in Portland, Ore. Her refund, she hoped, would help them secure a place to stay.

quote:
Tax refunds are a lifeline for many people. The average check from the IRS in 2019 so far is $2,795, which represents six weeks of income for the typical family in the U.S., and the largest cash infusion 1 in 3 households will see all year.

That's horrifying

I bet a lot of that refund was from the earned income tax credit too.

Pay your bills. I have no problem with this.

The fact that these people don't understand that refunds are the government handing you back your own money says a lot

Why is she surprised this happens? That's how it works and its not like its something the IRS isn't open about. I know a lot of people who get no refunds because they fell behind on their loans.

Our tax system is hilarious and sad at the same time.
It's almost like it is made complicated and convoluted intentionally so we can employ hundreds of thousands of people to be "experts" on it.
Also, people relying on tax refunds is about as poor financial planning as it gets. I bet she's pissed right about now for choosing a Gender Studies degree for $100k.

I typically get back $1-2k because my company intentionally withholds more than it should unless you manually change it individually.
I am ok with this tbh. I would make barely anything off of this money in interest or save much from paying off mortgage debt faster
And its fun to get that check once a year

So she racked up education bills, apparently failed to get a job with the bills she racked up, refused to pay said bills, and is now upset that someone made her pay? All while living in Portlandia?
Yup.
