re: FedEx wanting to scan your ID for a package delivery

My dad is in his 80s and still has to show his id to buy some over the counter cough syrup. I think it has to do with their computer systems.

How would they know it's important documents? It's BS to cover FedEx. They probably delivered alcohol to some underage kids and got busted. Half the time the FedEx guy leaves signature required stuff on my doorstep like a regular delivery.

I am not giving some random my license.

That is a recorded, restricted purchase- unlike alcohol or tobacco. In that instance ID is needed- although the law is BS, imo.

Am I missing something?

Actually... carding a 70yr old IS very hard to understand. Carding is supposed to prevent underage purchases of restricted items.
But it can lead to criminal charges, lawsuits, higher insurance rates, loss of liquor licenses, and business closures. So mandating your employees check every ID is the smart thing to do. Can you really not understand this? You own a business. You don’t want any of these headaches, so you tell your employees to ID everyone. It’s not rocket science.

I think it depends on the package. I never had to give my ID. My neighbor ordered a gun safe.. I am not sure why that would require them to scan an ID, but when it was delivered he had to provide his ID.

Selling beer to a 70yr old?
No. No it can't.

Yes, this is their way of shifting accountability when they give people the wrong package.
I get a lot of things for work sent to the Fedex location near my house. I went to pick up a package one day and went to bring it to a customer. They opened it and I was given the wrong package. It contained a Tiffany diamond ring with paperwork.
I returned it to Fedex and the lady that gave it to me didn't care at all. I asked what if I had kept it and she said when that happens, they report the item as stolen and the tracking number on the package is linked to the ID scanned. So the cops can show up to your house to retrieve the missing package.
Everything companies do now is just a method to shift liability from them.

Fraud.
I sign for a package valued as XYZ. Call FedEx and say, "I never received my package?"
Fedex says you signed for it, here's your signature.
"That's not my signature." Even though it is. "How do you plan to compensate me?"
Incoming check.

They will never deliver firearms to your house.

I got carded for my medicine once. I mean it's like 2.5k a pop so I get it.

I mean valid but not valid. I get barrels, triggers, guards, and uppers delivered to my house and I bet FedEx considers those "firearms". Never had to sign though, annoyed that they just leave BCM and Geiselle boxes on my front step.

Sometimes they scan the ID without consent, I don’t want a digital copy of my life available to anyone except my family and friends. Clerk may have a hidden camera and sell ID info with photo to scammers. I tell people “you can look at it from there, but cannot touch”. I saw a hotel taking photo copies of ID cards to keep in their file. Everyone handing over their license to anyone who asks it the reason more and more places are asking.
Free country, they can either provide service without ID or lose the money; they do not get to touch my private property. Sometimes I’ll ask back “can I see your ID?”, just so they realize it should be an uncomfortable request. Everyone requesting ID is getting far too common.
