A federal judge ruled Wednesday that the St. Helena Parish School District has achieved unitary status, ending its desegregation case after 66 years. The decision from U.S. District Judge Brian Jackson, chief judge of the court's Louisiana Middle District based in Baton Rouge, brings the civil rights lawsuit to a close and and releases the school district from federal supervision.

St. Helena has one school each for elementary, middle and high schools. Those institutions are cumulatively 89.7 percent black and 8.5 percent white, according to the court documents. The racial makeup of the school district still exists in sharp contrast to the demographics of the parish as a whole, which the U.S. Census estimates is 45 percent white and 52 percent black.

The middle and high schools now had D rankings — earlier the middle school was taken under state control for several years with an F ranking

This lawsuit absolutely destroyed public schools in this parish, much like EBR had been destroyed and Tangi is being destroyed. And this is what they call "success".

Yep, let’s spend millions bussing kids around to schools, because their parents choose to live in different neighborhoods.

They are desegregated because no white people are part of the school district anymore.

Few things in the last 50 years have been as destructive to America as busing. The 1965 Immigration Act may be the only thing that equals it.

That's the problem, it's a cash cow for the lawyers on both sides. They'll keep accommodating each other to draw things out.

I have to be careful on these topics if I want to keep my posting privledges, but it truly is sad how bad this has destroyed public education in LA. Destroyed it.

I don’t understand this. If there is only one school for each level, what the hell were the desegregating?

At the time of consolidation (1988), there were three high schools in the parish. After consolidation, white flight was so massive that there was no need for more than one.

Fresh out of college I was begging for teaching jobs. St Helena was one of my first job interviews and it was wonderful.

The principal was 45 mins late due to getting her nails done, BALD with her wig cap thingy on, and answered two phone calls during the interview to discuss Essence Fest plans!

They deserve everything that they receive and shame on those 8% for not lying and sending their kids down to LP.

Ponchatoula Schools are doing well and always will. The people here have never allowed the school board or a judge to run our schools.

Don't be fooled. If the judge makes a ruling that affects Ponchatoula in some way that "the people" see as negative, there will be nothing that you will be able to do about it. Do you think that the people in these other parishes just sat back and smiled as the schools went into a tailspin?
