That more people are killed by hammers and other blunt objects than rifles?

I mean it shouldn't be that hard to grasp the statistics in front of you.

What is the endgame of that statistic though?

A fact alone doesn't make a point, especially in an argument that is infamous for stretching the truth.

Blunt objects kill more people than rifles. Firearms account for 70%+ murders in this country. Facts, sure, but what's the point?

Calling for a ban on AR-15s is stupid because you're more likely to be killed by a blunt object?

Right, but I think their point is that if someone knows you and wants to kill you, they pretty much can do that with anything (gun, knife, blunt object, etc..). If someone wants to kill a bunch of random people, they aren't going to do it with a blunt object.

I don't think a ban on semi-automatic rifles is reasonable, though.

And they have many other options besides a rifle as well.

You're right they could use a car or a truck or a bus or a bomb or a poisen or a plane or a fire or a knife.

You're right, but it's the most efficient legal option, right?

Again, I'm not saying it's reasonable to ban semi-automatic rifles, but this is their argument.

Well, the stat category is a little odd because it lists deaths by blunt objects (hammers, clubs, etc.), knives or cutting instruments, and then rifles, but you think it would say "rifles or other guns" because the other categories or more broad.

No. A uhaul filled with explosives is way more efficient.

In fact, a semi-automatic rifle may be the least efficient option.

Are these "explodes" legal?

Really? It's the least efficient legal way to commit mass murder? If so, why do many people go that route?

Well...when the trigger is pulled, the hammer does hit the firing pin and cartridge goes boom...so I guess they are correct.

Sure. It's just fertilizer.

Because the point is media attention. No better way than to use the boogeyman that is the "assault rifle."

Yes.

Yes. Compare single event mass shootings and their death/injury toll to the Oklahoma city bombing, suicide bombers, 9/11, truck killings, etc...

Feelings of Power, fear a gun causes, enhanced publicity, psychoticnsss, the ability to watch it unfold? There are a number of case studies done on the mind of psychos. But they could've been much much more destructive with other legal means.

The point is that AR's aren't the boogeymen the media says they are.

I addressed this earlier in the thread - people don't care about gang violence, one on one violence, domestic violence, etc.

People are worried about children and random people being killed in mass settings. Rifles, while not necessarily the biggest culprit, are a much bigger percentage of those kills than "blunt objects." The conversation is not about what people could use, it's about what they are using.

The whataboutism in 2A threads regarding mass shooters is nauseating (not accusing you directly). You're not going to win over any advocates by arguing blunt objects are a bigger threat to your safety than rifles. Sticking to relevant facts is far more effective.

I'll also concede your not going to win over hardcore people either way, but the undecided folks in the middle are important.

As do vehicles. And drunk drivers. And a million other things I’m sure.

I still fail to grasp the point being made by the OP

Show of hands...who is REALLY worried about this?

To be frank, I'm far more worried about my two school aged boys being killed by some housewife who's tweeting about Common Sense Gun Control while trying to drive than I am about some random arse mass shooting at their schools, or Target, or elsewhere.

Why? Because we know just how many thousands and thousands are killed each year by distracted drivers. It absolutely dwarfs these random events.

I tend to be a parent that overly worries...but this just is not something I think much about at all. The statistics simply do not bear out spending any real time worrying about it.
