FB posts about the protestors - don't do it.

I've been very surprised about La. employers (not my clients) who are dismissing employees for FB posts about the protestors. I am getting a fair number of calls from both sides (employers and employees). I speak at seminars on social media related employment issues, so some calls are participants who have relatives who have been fired.

If you like your job, shut up on FB. The common theme is someone posts smack about the protestors, someone tags the post with the poster's employer's name, and then the poster gets fired for "creating a hostile work environment."

Sounds like these people need jobs themselves.

If people haven't learned this by now, they deserve what they get.

I've known a few people that have lost jobs over social media posts (not recently). It's one of the reasons that I turned all of mine off but LinkedIn and Twitter during the 2016 election. I have since turned Twitter off as well.

The posts were stupid, but the mob mentality is scary.

This has been happening at a low level, but now it seems to be far more common (and are made by employers who are not exactly "Ben and Jerry" type employers).

I don't have Twitter or Instagram, and I use Facebook only as a Rolodex.

On Linked In, I use a fake name and fake companies but real job descriptions. Idea is if I ever actively search for a job I just switch it to the real information.

LinkedIn is creepy anyway. They're the most effective when it comes to spying - they occasionally ask if I know Harry Knuttz, who has never had a LinkedIn account and is a fictional person I created to mess with scammers. In fact, the fake profile is primarily to foil data mining.

I don't use facebook, but I almost wonder if it doesn't make sense to list a place of employment where you don't work than to just not list anything. At least then the people that want to try and get you fired are contacting a place you don't work. Path of least resistance.

My company sent out a communication saying that everyone has a right to free speech and only threats should be reported. Made it clear that our rights are protected even regarding employment.

I have an alternative - do like me and choose to work for a company that isn't run by a bunch of twats.

I’m not Drew Brees. I have a spine and I don’t cry when someone calls me names as an adult male.
