Spin-off of the aircraft thread. I’m extremely fascinated with trains.

Nothing compares to these beauties IMO:

N&W J Class 4-8-4

ATSF 3751 Class 4-8-4

New York Central Hudson Class 4-6-4

Budd Streamlined dome-observation

As far as modern stuff, it’s mostly monotonous, but I’ve always had a soft spot for the P40/P42.

If you ever get the chance take Amtrak from Denver to Glenwood Springs during the winter.

Harriman standard 2-8-2 Mikado SP-745, built at the Southern Pacific shops in Algiers, retired in 1956 and spent nearly 40 years at Audubon Park...now operational again

The first engineer to operate this locomotive was my great-grandfather!

When I was a kid I was obsessed with trains and The Daylight in particular. I used to watch, rewind and rewatch that documentary constantly and even had a Daylight night shirt I would go to bed in. It was a dream of mine to ride that train one day haha

For some reason, the YouTube algorithm suggested a hobo channel to me a while back. It was Hobo Shoestring. He's an honest-to-God hobo, though he does actually have a home these days and only rides when he takes a notion. He's like an encyclopedia of railroad knowledge. I always had a passing interest in the railroad, but even more so after watching him.

I wish they offered more train routes aimed at vacationing with comfortable cars, good food, bar, etc. on scenic routes.

I have 3 24x36" framed photos of the Daylight in my living room, so yea, I think its my favorite lol. That thing is beautiful.

To me, the sound of a steam locomotive is right up there with a GAU gun hanging of the front of an A-10.

That's cool as hell. I have always loved trains since I was a kid, especially steam locomotives.

I think the Siemens Chargers are pretty cool for modern stuff.

I saw one of the few remaining active Amtrak Dash 8’s in NOLA a year or so back.

My dad says the EMD SD-40 was tough to beat when it came to driving them:

There are some out there. Chattanooga has one operated by the railroad museum. The Gatlinburg area has one as well with different events running throughout the year as well as event rentals.
