Low hour pilot flying MVFR (reportedly) in a rotary wing aircraft notoriously subject to mast bumping is a deadly combination.
R.I.P. to family and friends, tragic all the way around.

Cringe. You don’t have all the facts and there are people here that know this family and know them well.

Good people sometimes make bad decisions. Our hearts break for the family.
Pilots will see this accident as avoidable and a total disregard for the safety protocols currently in place.
Even if the pilot had their license and the FAA database had not updated yet…that means he would have only recently received his certification and lacked experience in those conditions

First time hearing of this. The YouTube videos would convince me to never ride in a Robinson helicopter.

What is the cruising speed range of helicopters?

That video is of a crash a couple of years ago in Rowlett, Tx. Scary shite.

I saw a gut wrenching post from the wife's mother. The wife was their only child with only one grandchild. She wrote that their whole world revolved around this little family. The wife apparently tried for years to have a baby and finally did. Lots of joy in the pictures on Facebook. I don't know them at all, but I sure feel for the families and, especially, the wife's family. They have lost their entire family.

Pretty clear result of a mast bump there. Love flying.. spent plenty of time in Piper Senecas but no desire to ever get in a helicopter.

What is a mast bump? Is it something that can be avoided?

Damn. That seems like a pretty substantial design flaw.
Also, OP would be less confusing if he noted that it's Iowa, LA.

Speaking of, have you ever tried to fly a helicopter?

I had a guy take me up in a PHI S-76 years ago, he was a check airman for them and he let me fly it around the patch, tried to show me how to hover, but that's the extent of my rotor wing experience

When most people see a headline saying something happened “in Iowa”, they think of the state of Iowa.

I definitely did have that thought but also didn't want to assume it and be a dick.
