Fastest Route vs. Other options

What is your preference for long distance traveling (1k+ miles) in regards to the options for "fastest route" vs alternative paths.
Fastest Route (1234 miles) goes through a lot of two-lane roads that cut through small towns which include traffic lights and an average of 55 mph speed limit.
Alternative route (1300 miles) mainly stays on freeways where the average speed limit is 70 mph and avoids small towns.

Small town fastest route only works if you don't catch lights, and don't get stuck behind someone transporting their mobile home.

Stay on the interstate if possible. The times for "fastest route" assumes you will never get a red light or a tractor on the road.

1234 miles/55 mph is a 22.43 hour drive

1300 miles/70 mph is an 18.57 hour drive
You'd get better gas mileage on the alternate route if you bumped that speed up to 95........

Sounds like the second route may be faster, seems like you may be confusing “shorter” as in less miles, as faster. But if you’re going average of 55 for 1234, that will take way longer than average of 70 for 1300.

whichever route is less likely to get me shot.

I'd stay on the interstate. It will probably end up being faster and, even if it isn't, it will be close and a much less frustrating trip, generally speaking.

If only there was a simple equation to solve this conundrum.
Posted on 5/27/20 at 9:04 am to bad93ex
Whichever you can drive faster on to save on gas
Posted on 5/27/20 at 9:05 am to bad93ex
1234/55 = 22.44 hours
1300/70 = 18.57 hours
Not sure how the top option there is the fastest route.

If I'm in no big hurry, I prefer to avoid interstates. Seeing and stopping in little rural towns can be pretty interesting, and you miss that on the interstate.

some OT discussions will never die.

I agree that passing through various small towns can be quite interesting, and can make stops easier as you don’t have to exit. However, one has to be careful with the constantly changing speed limits as the highway may drop from 65 to 45 or 35 mph rather rapidly.

It really depends on the trip.
Usually, if it's not scenic, the interstate. Obviously a serious interstate cluster can sometimes create more havoc than a serious 2 lane cluster, but interstate is more reliable.
But I do go the back way to the beach (for some stretches) just because I grew up going that route and I like going through those towns every few months. Not particularly scenic, more nostalgia and my mind associates that trip as "heading to the beach."

Give me the interstate. Driving through those small towns you will have the speed limit go from 55 to 66 to 35 to 55 to 25.
It's hard to keep up with. Not to mention some areas you have cops who can't wait to bust someone not from the area for speeding.

How much of the first option is interstate?
