Hammond does not have close to 140k people. The population of Tangipahoa Parish is only 138k.

The frick that have to do with geography? They ran the south from Richmond, Virginia has never been the Deep South.

The Houma/thib outflow has to be because of skyrocketing insurance rates. Hearing accounts of escrows jumping $1,000 a month due to insurance costs.

Same with Lafayette. Parish has about 240k. Listed at 419k here. The metro must extend beyond the parish

They are. They're included in the Baton Rouge MSA

The "Deep South" has traditionally been considered to include Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, and South Carolina

You're probably the only person with this opinion. As far as more ties to the north, I'm guessing you don't consider Georgia to be in the Deep South either because of Atlanta?
