We specifically didn’t let our kids go play in the snow because we knew that we had no way to warm them up when they came back in.

Also,if I remember correctly they put him to bed at night and didn’t wake him up till 2:30 the next day.

The parents are more at fault than power for that fact alone.

This is obviously tragic, but I’m sure people from Honduras that had to get here illegally have no idea how to check for hypothermia or what the symptoms are. That’s on them. Not ERCOT. And I say that as somebody pretty pissed off at ERCOT right now.

No it is not fair to even give this suit a minute of the court's time. The courts have real cases before them. The parents were 100% negligent in this and should be facing manslaughter charges.

Well, they are supposed to supply power. And they are also to know WTF to do when there's an issue.
They know how many customers they have and the knew the storm was coming...therefore knew they couldn't match needed output.
Bottoming, is even with bad parenting decisions, the company played a role in the child's death

No. They didn’t. Last week was tough but it’s not hard to keep your kids alive when you have shelter. Dress your child in multiple layers, don’t let them go play in wet, below freezing weather then stay in wet clothes. Sit together under blankets to share warmth. In addition, there were warming shelters open all across the city.

It wasn’t the loss of power that killed their child. It was their lack of caring for and protecting their child that led to his death. Everyone I know without power all last week managed to keep their family alive.

Not one penny of that 100 million will bring the 11 year old back. Everybody wants to sue someone these days.

the fact that the kid died because his family lost power in a storm that was predicted two weeks ago and during a winter that was predicted before it even began by meteorologists in Texas and abroad, then you’re without hope. And if ERCOT has said “flee, we can’t provide you power” a bunch of us would have done so. Instead, they let this shite happen.

Well everyone else knew this storm was coming too. Why didn't the parents prepare? Did they not know there is a strong possibility that they would lose power in a winter storm? Why is everyone parroting "ERCOT knew this was coming"? So did everyone else. People lose power all the time in natural disasters.

I hate that the child died, but people have to prepare for this kind of thing. If you aren't prepared, move out of the path of the storm. People on the coast do it every single summer. If you can't afford to get a hotel away from the worst of the storm, you probably aren't fit to be a parent.

Story doesn't add up
Yeah, the fact that a baby survived, but an 11 year old supposedly froze to death doesn't make sense. Babies lose heat much more rapidly than larger people.

The baby probably didn't play in the snow and then be put to bed wet. The baby also was in bed with the parents. The middle child was in bed with the child that died.

When visiting Lake Nyasa in Tanzania some years back, our African friends asked "is it true in America that if I slipped on this dock I could sue the owner?" When we answered yes, they nearly fell off the dock laughing.

Has there been an autopsy? You don't get hypothermia under a bunch of blankets in a home.

2 questions about this story.

Was the power already out when the kid was playing in the snow. Also did the kid get a chance to get out of his wet clothes once he got inside.

If they allows their son play in the snow knowing he had no way to warm back up once inside then that isn't smart. If the kid stayed and slept in his wet clothes then that is just beyond terrible parenting.

But I'm only speculating here. Idk what happened

Parents should be arrested for negligence. It was reported that he only had 3 bedsheets as cover.

Those idiots should've had him between their bodies to keep him warm.

Because that is how we do shite in this country now. Something terrible happens? First, figure out who to blame. Second, get a lawyer. Third, sue. I guess grieving can be done whilst taking care of the first three.

Look, this was a once in a 100+ year weather event. It sucks for a whole bunch of people for a whole bunch of reasons. Anyone who knew anything leading up to it could have told you that many Southeastern states were not prepared for such a storm. The reality is, it is much easier and cheaper for you (the parents in this situation) to prepare than it is for the entire damn electric grid. The truth is, those parents failed that child. If they didn't have the money to prepare with alternate forms of heat and/or better blankets and clothes/sleeping bags, it was their responsibility to get their family to an appropriate shelter, that we know was available.

If the parents take care of their responsibilities, which didn't require a billion dollars and a damn near act of Congreas to do, that child would still be alive. Yet, here they are looking for someone to blame. I guess that is easier than accepting responsibility and grieving appropriately.
