Talk about hiding in plain sight. This one always fascinated me.
What fascinated me and scared me at the same time was how he presented himself in court when he was allowed to make a statement to the court, judge and victim's families.
He rambled on and on in a manner describing the killings with about as much emotion as one would use to give out a recipe to bake a pie. He showed he was totally oblivious to the impact of his crimes and displayed absolutely no remorse------------other than he was now caught, tried and going to prison for the rest of his life.

Anyone that's fascinated enough by serial killers to deep dive on several of them creeps me the F out. We had one of these weirdos in HS he was very bright, successful in academics, debate champ, very personable but odd and not social outside school, strict family. He was open about his fascination w serial killers.

You can add Israel Keyes and Gilgo Beach Serial Killer to your list as well.
One of the most shocking I've ever seen was the case of Russel Williams.
Although he was only charged with 2 killings making him one shy of serial killer status, his overall criminal activity was staggering and showed the gradual increase in risk these types go through.
He started off doing break-ins and stealing women's underwear and sex toys and did that numerous times before graduating to binding women up after stripping them and taking pictures. And like Dennis Rader, he had a stash of selfies with him dressed in the underwear of the women he had stolen it from.
Then he took the plunge and murdered 2 women before he was finally caught.
The big kicker was, this guy was a Colonel in the Canadian Air Force in command of one of Canada's biggest air bases. In his duties he flew the Queen of England and the Canadian Prime Minister around the country.
The first woman he killed happened to be an Air Force member who worked at the same base.
The video of his eventual interrogation is a master class in how to get a confession out of a criminal. The detective did a masterful job easing into the facts of the cases and getting Williams to eventually confess.

Do you have Spotify?
If so lookup True Crime Kent. You’re welcome. Hilarious and he covers mass murderers, serial killers etc. very detailed. He even does some of his own cross referencing in cases to check accuracy.
Edmund Kemper is interesting.

Don't have Spotify but I do recognize all the names on your list having seen true crime shows about them over the years.
Like I mentioned earlier, the list of depraved murderers just in the course of my 73 years on earth is insane.

And there’s many more we don’t have yet.
They basically know for a fact 3-4 truck drivers are serial killers at this moment.

Five of the above were married at the time of their arrest and it blindsided their families to find out just how evil their husbands and fathers were.
Dig a little deeper and you'll find a lot of denial on the part of the spouses. Not that they necessarily should have known he was a serial killer but in most cases there was something seriously off about him.

quote:yeah, i was coming to say this. A lot of the "oh my gosh, it can't be poor Toddy, he's such a great husband" is because people have blinders up for people they love. They see things that are off and wrong, but they make excuses. These serial killers weren't normal. But, the strange signs became normal to those that were close to them.

Loving unconditionally is great. But, you can't just let things that are off go and call it love. It isn't loving to let your mentally unstable spouse/family member just continue to wallow in their unstable state. It isn't loving to give your spouse space and not know where they are for hours and hours every day, nor what they spend money on. And, it isn't about a lack of trust. It's a lack of accountability that we all need.
We're all capable of heinous things. But, most of us have accountability in place, even if we don't recognize it as such.

I've seen a couple shows about him and he sure played the system perfectly when locked up at Atascadero State Mental Hospital as a violent youth offender. He told those Drs. exactly what they wanted to hear and really ingratiated himself with the staff while there, hiding the animal that was underneath that huge frame.
He gets out at 21 after killing his grandparents at 15, goes back to live with his mother after the hospital recommended he not do that due to their contemptuous relationship.
Then goes on to kill multiple co-eds at the local college and eventually kills his mother and one of her friends before turning himself in.
While doing all those crimes he would often drink beer with the cops at the local watering hole they frequented and got on a first name basis with many of them.

Very few people want to be a monster.

That was haunting. The way he was able to remember murders he had commit decades ago down to every last detail. You can tell that he constantly replays these crimes in his head.

He helped the BAU track killers.

His wife was asking the cops what it was all about and when they told her she was married to a serial killer, she didn't believe it.
My Dad was friends with her. She used to work at the Circle K by the house.

The Golden State Killer - aka Joseph Deangelo. I can't get over his rap sheet.

Sean Vincent Gillis, I don't think he was married. I think they just lived together.
Saying that, she knew he was weird. They had a sex like maybe 4 times, according to him and her. He would watch extremely graphic rape porn and she knew it.
She can say she didn't know or she was in denial but she was close enough to know, oh yeah, this all makes sense. He's a nut job.

Has anyone given any thought to the most likely fact that some/many of these serial killers are born that way?
There are documented cases of serial killers who came from a very normal family. The OP hinted at it, right? Everyone and everything seems normal and unbeknownst to you is a serial killer living with you or next door to you or works with you.

quote:THIS IS NOT EXCUSING OR TAKING UP FOR PEDOS:
This is probably true of serial rapists, folks that go on the dark web and look for kiddie porn. I assume most of them know it’s fricked up, and some probably want to stop, but they are chemically imbalanced and are addicted.
But I read a study years ago that something like 80% of pedos were molested as children themselves. It’s a fricking vicious cycle. I think it re-wires their brain as far as sexual desire or gratification.
