Facebook: Has it advanced society or caused it to regress?

At its inception, it was used exclusively by college students and required an ".edu" account for sign-up. It was a truly innovative way to stay in touch, reconnect, and share our lives via the internet.
Flash forward to 2020, and Facebook has grown into a totally different beast. People feel the need to post their views on everything, be it political or otherwise. Were these views something that people generally shared with family, friends, co-workers, etc. before Facebook? Possibly. However, it seems like Facebook causes further tribalism and division amongst us because we are seeing sides of people we never saw before.
In addition, the platform has become extremely effective in spreading fear, hence why every suburban housewife shares a story about almost being trafficked at Walmart or being followed at the gym by a strange man.
Adding to all this is the influence foreign actors have on the general populous through Facebook, i.e. Russia. There's no denying they have server farms that not only attempted to influence elections, but pit different groups against each other.
Facebook's algorithms also work to only show you topics and comments that you favor, meaning if you are a conservative you will rarely see anything from the opposing view and vis versa.
In your opinions, do you feel that Facebook has helped us advance as a society? Or has it caused us to regress?

It has allowed idiots to find each other and validate their warped and small world views. On both sides of the political spectrum.

The world would be a much better place without it.

I would love for ANYONE to tell me one bad thing about facebook that's not also true about tigerdroppings
it's the exact same userbase, FB just has much more users. but both are capable of some insane misinformation
for example, the 15,000 page QAnon thread on the poli board

The internet and social media have tremendous upsides and potential.
The problem is that humans - as a species - are not capable of wielding it responsibly. The genesis of social media was like handing a bottle of vodka and car keys to a 13-year-old.
I do wonder sometimes if people 500 years down the road will look back and laugh at how we used the power of the internet.

It’s done way more harm than good. I have unfollowed pretty much everybody on my friends list. Use it mostly for work-related groups and to sell shite.

:sigh:
stop blaming social media for everything
narcissistic people were still narcissists before social media
paranoid people were still paranoid before social media
angry people were still angry before social media
social media is simply a tool

Facebook was awesome back when you'd see the girls upload their spring break pics before INstagram/ Snapchat.
now it's Aunt Karen showing her new tattoo and her countdown of 245 days until her Carnival cruise to Jamaica.

social media is simply a tool
A tool is an object used to extend the ability of an individual to modify features of the surrounding environment.
An automobile is a tool that clearly has advanced society. I didn't place blame on social media. I'm not sure the argument that it's simply a tool dismisses the purpose of my question.
Has the tool caused society to advance or regress?

it has very obviously allowed society to progress in the ways of how we share information and communicate

Facebook and other social media are proven to be harmful to brain chemistry. Little dopamine echo chambers that cause people to regress socially.
