Facebook Declares War on the Babylon Bee

Not Satire

On Tuesday, Facebook stood by its decision to demonetize the Christian satire site The Babylon Bee over a satire article regurgitating a witch joke from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Facebook claimed that the article “Senator Hirono Demands ACB Be Weighed Against A Duck To See If She Is A Witch” actually “incites violence.” The social media platform demanded that the Babylon Bee edit the article and not speak publicly about the review, but Babylon Bee CEO Seth Dillon went public.
“So after a manual review, Facebook says they stand by their decision to pull down this article and demonetize our page. I’m not kidding. They say this article ‘incites violence,'” Dillon tweeted. “It’s literally a regurgitated joke from a Monty Python movie!”

“In what universe does a fictional quote as part of an obvious joke constitute a genuine incitement to violence?” the CEO asked. “How does context not come into play here? They’re asking us to edit the article and not speak publicly about internal content reviews. Oops, did I just tweet this?”

quote:

“This situation raises a serious question about double standards,” Dillon told PJ Media. “How fairly does Facebook enforce these standards? A Black Lives Matter leader recently said they’ll ‘burn down this system’ if change doesn’t happen. That’s allowed on Facebook. You can quote it. You can link to it. But you can’t rehash a Monty Python joke about burning a witch at the stake?”

Censorship is killing the last bit of humor and comedy that survived political correctness.

Because progressives have no sense of humor. You can't have one when everything is about social justice, and social justice is Very. Serious.

One more piece of evidence to use to remove their Section 230 protections. Maybe with a few hundred lawsuits they'll fix themselves.

Offensive is offensive and everyone’s feelings matter!!!1! Except for happiness through humor. That’s not allowed ever.

I don't think censorship is the problem. Humans are the problem. The idea that a company is supposed to police itself or not police itself from hate speech, misinformation, pedophilia etc without pissing everyone off is absurd. The lines are grey. All their stock should be sold and distributed evenly to members that had to sign up with a .edu account. Anyone that didn't start their FB with a .edu account should be permanently banned.

Of course humans are the problem. The humans that selectively edit content based on their own political ideology.

Which is why their 230 protection needs to be removed. They're not a platform, they're a publisher.

They are neither. New language needs to be written. You can still go to the bablyon bee's website and read their articles stories spoofs whatevs. By posting them on FB they are giving them permission to do with it as they please. Read the TOS.

I may have to start an account, so I can cancel it.

This level of censorship is getting scary.

Its killing it from mainstream, but its just forcing comedy to go out on its on.. Thanks to podcast, but I am sure at some point podcast platforms will start cracking down on what people can and can't say.

I didn't realize they were a Christian site...that's surprising considering I've never met a practicing Christian with much of a sense of humor.

It's no more absurd than being pissed at a company letting you use their shite for free and then getting mad about how they are using it and yelling censorship like a little girl. If you don't like it don't use it.

Same exact thing holds true for this website. Exactly the same. FB is just a behemoth

I was trying to explain to one of my lib friends why giving homeless people money conditions them to beg instead of getting a job and I used pavlov's dogs as an example to show how conditioned behavior works.

His response: Don't compare homeless people to dogs....

First off, the example compares ALL people to dogs and him taking it to mean only homeless people says more about his biases than mine.

Second, How TF is that what he got out of the convo?

This is a mistake. This will backfire.

Silly to go to war with satirists, especially very good ones. They win every time. They're already not serious - by design.
