They put that there to see who peels off the interstate.
Having driven part of that road repeatedly when we still had the properties in NOLA, that "checkpoint " sign has been catching them for at least thirty years.
One thing you didn't mention: summer and the tires can't take the heat of the highway and they delaminate and leave tire bits all over the roads.
The road north of Gadsden used to be so bad that people would pull off to check to see which tire was going flat. Tires were fine, but the joints between the poured concrete slabs made the trip miserable.

Uh, if you really started out in NM, you couldn’t have failed to notice just how bad I40 is in NM. Worse than anything Louisiana has to offer.

In HS I once drove from ABQ to Memphis in a single day.

I-40 from Albuquerque to the Texas state line is noticeably better that any stretch of I-20 from just West of Shreveport to the Alabama state line.
