Yeah looking at some of the alleged stats of the Tianjin explosions - no way that's accurate (death count, KT, etc.) I'm sure China didn't allow investigation.
Yep you're right. This is from the wiki page:
quote:
Censorship and criticism
Professional and social media reports were censored by Chinese authorities.[77] The censorship rate increased tenfold on the social media site Weibo,[78] with users reporting the deletion of their posts regarding the blasts, with "Tianjin" and "explosion" being the most censored words.[73][74][79][80] An article by Caijing, which carried an interview with a firefighter who said that no-one on the front line had been informed of the dangerous chemicals on site that would react exothermically when mixed with water, was deleted after it had been reposted 10,000 times; many other posts mentioning the existence of deadly sodium cyanide were also expunged.[79]
The Cyberspace Administration of China banned all journalists from posting to social media, and insisted on strict adherence to Xinhua copy. On 15 August, it announced that it had shut down 18 websites and suspended 32 more for spreading false information.[81][82][83][84][85] More than 360 Weibo and public WeChat accounts which had allegedly been spreading such false rumors have been "punished according to laws". Of these accounts, over 160 were shut down permanently.[86]
Press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders (RSF) accused the Chinese state media of playing up the heroic efforts of rescue workers and firefighters while downplaying the causes of the explosions and the number of casualties. RSF said that censorship by the Chinese authorities showed "a flagrant indifference to the public's legitimate concerns".[81]
A CNN correspondent was interrupted by bystanders and forced to leave during a live report outside TEDA Hospital.[73][87] A journalist from the Beijing News reported that he and two other reporters were chased by police, caught, searched, and made to delete photographs from their cameras and computers.[88]

I have a hard time fathoming bigger explosions than this/Tianjin that aren't nuclear.
There have been quite a few.

China said only 173 people died in the Tianjin (city of 15 million) explosion. Bullfrickingshit.

Google the Pepcon explosion for a YouTube video. Massive explosion outside Vegas in the 1990s

By and large, nuclear plants are a controlled environment with strict evacuation plans. Chemical plants are the exact opposite.
You couldn’t be more wrong about chemical plants

I know the list, and I know some exist
That said, I have a hard time believing Tianjin wasn't larger than reported. And I have a hard time fathoming what larger/non-nuclear explosions would look like. Which is a deficit in imagination, not doubt that they exist.

PEPCON Disaster
On 4 May 1988 about 4,250 short tons (3,860 metric tons) of ammonium perchlorate (NH4ClO4) caught fire and set off explosions near Henderson, Nevada. A 16-inch (41 cm) natural gas pipeline ruptured under the stored ammonium perchlorate and added fuel to the later, larger explosions. There were seven detonations in total, the largest being the last. Two people were killed and hundreds injured. The largest explosion was estimated to be equivalent to 1 kiloton of TNT (4.2 TJ).The accident was caught on video by a broadcast engineer servicing a transmitter on Black Mountain, between Henderson and Las Vegas.
quote:
Texas City Disaster
On 16 April 1947, SS Grandcamp, loaded with 8,500 short tons (7,700 t) of ammonium nitrate, exploded in port at Texas City, Texas. 581 died, over 5,000 injured. Using standard chemical data for decomposition of ammonium nitrate makes this equivalent to 2.7 kilotons of TNT exploding. The US Army rates the relative effectiveness factor of ammonium nitrate, compared to TNT, as 0.42.This conversion factor makes the blast equivalent to (0.42)7,770 tons, or 3.2 kilotons of TNT, with the discrepancy between the total energy and relative effectiveness value of the explosive power being due to direct comparisons between high explosives not being as simplistic as comparing total internal energy of each high explosive.
This is generally considered the worst industrial accident in United States history.

Has to be top 2 of the biggest explosions in the world after WWII
You do know that the US and USSR detonated dozens of massive nukes after WWII, yes?

They got real creative with that name.
I wonder if it’s in West Texas?

I would think one thing that helped with the lower number of deaths is that there was already a fire going before the massive explosion. Hopefully, some people were getting out of the immediate blast zone.

Welp it wasn't 50 tons of ammonium nitrate as was first reported now it is reported that it was actually 2,750 TONS of ammonium nitrate which has been left unsecured in the warehouse for 7 years.
Lebanon’s pm says 2750 TONS of stored ammonium nitrate (like a huge fertilizer bomb) ripped through Beirut. Now concerns about fumes in a city with blown out windows and doors.
