Lebanese Red Cross official Georges Kettaneh just said hundreds if not thousands of casualties in Beirut explosion.
If they are using the official definition of "casualties," staying in the hundreds or even low thousands would be great news, relatively speaking.

It wasn't filled with nitrate per say. The nitrate had been mixed with fuel oil to form an extremely potent oxidant/fuel mixture.

Seems like a questionable place to store a highly explosive substance.

A while ago, some person(s) attempted to smuggle a large amount of explosive material (presumably) sodium nitrate into Lebanon via that port. They were caught, the shipment was confiscated, and for some reason was stored long-term in a building near the port.

Extremely negligent to store a highly explosive material next to a fireworks storage facility.

Doesn't appear like it would have. Doesn't look like Lebanon has an LNG terminal to date.

Lebanese authorities state that the blast occurred due to a cache of Sodium Nitrate at the Beirut port. The explosive material had been confiscated and was meant to be destroyed, but was instead ignited during a fire.
This would mean that Hezbollah was storing the material for future use.
