The Beirut Airport which is 10 km away suffered significant damage as well.

There are other port complexes in Beirut, and other ones in Lebanon in Tripoli and Sidon.

Fireworks next to a grain storage facility isn’t good planning.

Man those are bad arse. That would also give some credibility to the story of the ship blowing up, right?

From a blue check mark on Twitter:

quote:

Lebanese Army source just told me no cause confirmed yet for explosions in Beirut but possibly a "container of fireworks was burning and the fire spread to reach a nitrate warehouse that led to this massive explosions."

Twitter

Whose bright idea was it to store fireworks next to a building filled with nitrate?

Halifax Nova Scotia in WWI had two ships collide in their harbor. It was winter, one was carrying munitions.

Many people in the city went to their windows to watch the ships burn, which seldom happened.

The munitions ship blew up.

Massive force broke all the windows facing the harbor. Many people were blinded and cut up.

A blizard was coming. Many cities rallied (even Boston) and sent medical supplies by train. They also sent huge quantities of replacment glass and all the glazers from those cities, to make Halifax liveable in the cold of winter.

Just the replacement glass for Beiruit is going to be massive problem.

If a building 10 km away suffered that kind of damage, Jesus Christ, just a horrific amount of damage has been done to that city. I guess the rest of the world can now say "At least we aren't in Beirut" as far as 2020 is concerned.
