2 liter bottles can be used to make extremely loud booms with fireworks trapped inside. I've seen, and felt it a block away.

Heard it too, in Magnolia Lakes on Burbank. The shockwaves/echo definitely lingered for a few seconds.

A buddy of mine used to make them somehow with leather speed bags. They'd rattle windows for blocks. Of course he set them off in the middle of BFE so there really weren't that many windows getting rattled.
