Saw this in Maine one time and I thought it was the coolest shite ever.

I'm not doubting that it happens, but I've never witnessed this.

Probably because it has to get COLD
The sap/water in the trees freeze and then expand

I’ve never saw this in Chicago. But it only got down to a severely miserable and legit dangerous -22F there when I was there. I’ve heard the pops but never saw an explosive shedding of bark.
I imagine the Elms and Maples common to that area aren’t quite as susceptible to this…..but -40F is just something I never want to experience. That doesn’t happen every year - even on the other side of the lake.
I kind of want to see it. But I don’t want to be where it’s cold enough to see it.

Wouldn’t want to be standing near one when it goes though

I've never witnessed it, but I have seen trees in the northern woods that look like the after-effects of this video: bark seemingly peeled like a banana, and ofc having felled and died after the fact.

Juggler Boasberg has ruled that Ice is racist and the storms are to be halted immediately because global warming has a right to be heard and a right to create its own mayhem in Michigan.

There has been a whole hullabaloo about exploding frozen trees on weather Xwitter. There were some fake videos a couple days ago that showed full on exploding trees with sounds like a bomb added in.

No doubt. With AI added into the mix, it's easy to make sensationalized videos.
I'd think that it's just a tree cracking/splitting from the extreme change in temperature. Probably sounds like a gunshot, but I doubt that trees are "exploding."

I suspect the video sound I posted in the OP has been embellished with a "shotgun" sound.
Apparently it's more of a cracking sound.

I heard of trees doing this:

9% seems like an oddly exact figure

Real curious how they arrived at the right trees, at the right time, just before they exploded.
